http://www.newsday.com/long-island/suffolk/authorities-search-for-missing-boater-from-li-1.12174009#comments Unusual that nobody saw or knows what happened? So many people and boaters in that area and in those channels? Unless he tried to cut through the shallows? Very strange . Hopes this turns out well.

Not sure if this story was updated yet but this is the text of the Newsday link

Authorities were searching for a missing boater who did not arrive at a Lindenhurst marina as expected Saturday evening.
Coast Guard officials said Andrew Wise, 48, was reported missing Saturday. He left Gilgo Beach about 5:20 p.m., destined for the Anchorage Yacht Club, but did not arrive in the 25 minutes it usually takes to reach the Lindenhurst marina, officials said.
Wise left in an 8- to 13-foot white or gray dinghy, and Coast Guard officials had issued an urgent broadcast Saturday night about his disappearance. It was not immediately known where Wise lives.

We cruised back from Montauk. Passed that spot at 6. Saw the dinghy upside down in the water. Bunch of boats were around it. Accident already happened. I would check the hull of all the go fasts in Ayc. I bet one may have damage or a mark from his motor. Sun glare heading west was bad. And With the white caps and waves would be hard to see a dinghy.

Real shame. I have seen his boat in AYC.

I am not happy about this incident. I know we all hate regulations but the more I look at this I bet this guy got hit by a go fast.

I really feel we should have speed limits in channels and cutting across channels. No boat should go more than 45 mph in any channel or across a channel.
From my slip at AYC I see go fasts going 100+ in the channel, across the channel, etc.

If your in a dinghy going less than 10mph, there is no way you can get out of the way fast enough.

I also think we should have sound abatement rules. These go fasts regularly start up with no mufflers in our marina.

I keep seeing this poor guy on the news, sounds like a smart guy, experienced boater, 48yo. That can be any of us!

I believe there are speed limits in the channels......the signs have been down since I was a kid. As boats got faster with bigger engines those speed limits are simply ignored.

Real sad but even if it was an accident the hit and run if that's what happened makes it a crime. As far as speed limits they exist 45 mph on the bay and 12 mph State Channel. The GSB has turned into the wild west only the usual boaters obey the rules. Hope they find the victim and the coward.

Apparently a boater found a body matching his description floating in the waters off Copiague this morning. Suffolk PD, CG helo, and multiple FD vessels responding.

...and the last thing we need is more regulation. People need to boat responsibly, always keep a sharp lookout, etc. god forbid if 12MPH was actually enforced the entire State channel. It's a shame, this guy's boat is right over by on "A" dock.

Based on the time and the day of the week my guess would be either collision with another boat, or possibly swamped by huge wake and injured to the point that he couldn't swim.
Either way, a terrible tragedy.
Two weeks, two tragedies. The first we know involved an irresponsible boater who caused an injury and fled. Strong possibility that the same thing happened with this one.
I've said it before; They need more LE patrols out there and possibly have them enforcing speed limits in heavily travelled channels during peak times on weekends and holidays.

Very sad whatever happened. I saw helicopters by the end of my canal Saturday night and then on the way to Watch Hill Sunday saw a CG helicopter running search patterns so knew something must have happened then saw the articles online.

Strange thing is I was doing roughly the same thing he was at roughly the same time except I was going west, but I didn't see anything. I was clamming east of the Lindenhurst cut in my white Mercury inflatable and at about 5:15 headed home, after crossing the Lindenhurst cut I went diagonally across the bay to my canal which is west of the AYC. For such a nice day boat traffic was light, I kept looking back towards the east to see if I had to plan for any boats crossing when I got to the east/west channel but except for a sailboat I passed behind there was hardly anyone around. I thought the originally iffy forecast must have kept people home. It was pretty rough out (in a dinghy at least). Hard to say what could have happened, like Dave said sun glare can be tough and someone not fully paying attention... But if someone hit him they must have known it.

I was coming west from the east with the sun glare. I can attest that a white dinghy in the 2 foot slop with whitecaps and sun glare would not be easy to spot....especially if your doing 90 mph in flats. He was clearly hit from the east per the damage to his dinghy.

The big quesiton will be did he drown? If he did then he was thrown from dinghy and knocked unconcious and could of survived, but the ahole kept going which gave him no chance.

Hang em high if they catch him.

As for the regs, I would like to see a max limit of say 45mph in channels or cutting across channels. These guys do 100+ in flats then zip across lindy cut. Any slow moving boat can't get out of the way fast enough. With the wind and sun you may not hear or see before it's too late!

It's all fun and games until people start to get hurt or killed.
Excessive speed and killer wakes in crowded narrow channels are all dangerous, especially when you mix in alcohol or inconsiderate boat operators.
The go fasts are bad, but so are some of the floating condos that throw huge wakes with their bows in the air while they plow water and swamp anything within a hundred yards of them.
When I fish in the bay, or cruise around on my kids 18' bow rider, the go fasts are an annoyance and I think they're crazy, but the water plows are a much bigger problem. If they can't get them on plane, they should have to go slow enough to avoid creating a hazardous wake.

This is a tragedy and if someone was at fault, I hope they are caught and are prosecuted to the fullest.

With respect to go fasts, I agree that some speed limit would be prudent but I think they can be stopped already for operating in an unsafe manner. I dont think it will make a difference.

With respect to wakes, I am of two minds. Yes you are responsible for them but if you are fishing in a channel where speed is allowed, then you need to expect to be rocked. I have seen so many boats fishing that a big boat would be up and down off plane constantly.

I had heard that someone was taken to the hospital for a jetski accident that night. They found blood on the raft and they are trying to match that to the blood of the guy on the jetski...not sure how much truth there is to that but its what I had heard.

A reasonable wake from a boat on plane is one thing, a tidal wave created by a plow is another.

Boatcrazy, I heard something similar about a potential link to a guy who came in with a broken leg on a jetski around the same time who he said he hit something. Did you hear anything further?

JohnC, the Jetski guy lawyered up, that to me sounds suspicious

I don't get how any boater would not stop and help someone they hit. If I was drunk, (I never operate a boat or a car drunk) and hit someone, I would rather spend a night in jail, than kill someone. Hence, I would stop and help! It disgusts me what happened. This young man could have been saved, he died because a coward hit him and rather than take the heat, he let a man die! That is repulsive and gross!!!
