ok, since everyone was so helpful with my broken ground issue, i'll throw out another one.

I have four exhaust ports on my boat (twin engine) and three mufflers. The port engine only has one muffler on it. (no, I have no idea why)

How hard is it to install a muffler, or is that a mechanic-onlykind of operation? These are inline canister type, in the middle of the exhaust hose.

Thanks

please take a pic. there are mufflers that look like hose and are about the same size. Pics would be helpful as you may have 4 instead of 3.

The surveyor noted it in his inspection, and I am pretty sure it's missing from looking at it. (you can really tell by the sound), but I'll get some photos when I head down to the boat next.

Did they re-plumb both manifolds into one muffler through a Y connection? This may cause back pressure (and bad mileage) on that engine. If the one manifold is not going to a muffler and you start that engine you will know right away because it will sound like a dragster. PS. Be careful of CO poisoning and make sure the hole in the transom from the missing muffler won't allow water to enter. Can't wait for the pictures....

THere is no Y connection, they just used a straight section of piping to the transom. Yeah, that engine is loud. The Surveyor was surprised, but said that it should work fine. no leaks or anything.

Has anyone replaced a muffler (or installed one)? Is it tough?

Oh so they removed the muffler and replaced with a straight pipe? You should be able to get a muffler back in there. Take a picture and a few measurements including the in and out pipe sizes. No a good idea to have one side of engine with muffler and the other without since this may also cause uneven back preasure. Good luck

Are they straight-shaped inline mufflers? If so, consider yourself lucky - any marine retail supply store (such as Boatfix.com) can supply one. On some older Carvers (like my old 2895) they had "Z" shaped mufflers in which the upper hose had to be squished INSIDE of the rubber flange on the muffler and a clamp installed. That was a very hokey installation and they quickly stopped making them AFAIK. When Merc went to GM engines they continued the "Z" shaped muffler in the 28s, but they were the type where the hose went over the flange and then the clamp was installed - a more common installation...

Straight, 3 or 4" pipe. The others look new. I think they just never got around to installing the last one. I'll try to get over this weekend to get pictures. I do know that the other ones have the part number printed on top, so it shouldn't be too hard to find a similar part. '

I hope...

It would appear that 1050300 is a matching part, but I can't quite tell. I have a mail to centek to find out what they reccommend

I hope Kenny or another RO can supply some good info for you on this unit...

I finally got replacement mufflers, but it looks like I need to pull the riser elbow to do the installation. Is this for a pro only, or can it be done my a hack like myself?

You can do the riser yourself. Its just a few bolts and out it comes. Remember to replace the gasket when you put it back together...
