I'm getting ready to replace my zincs and I noticed that the manufacturer specs aluminum for the large hull zinc and zinc for the shafts, tabs and rudders. My understanding was that you don't mix metals if they are all bonded together.

I called Meridian and they said that the aluminum will make the zincs last longer. That's fine because the zincs only lasted a half season last year.

Does this seem accurate?

I hope I have this right:
1) Never mix anodes
2) Zinc in salt water
3) Aluminum in brackish water
4) Magnesium in fresh water

I believe alluminum is fine in salt water also. New Merc outdrives come with alluminum anodes as they don't know if the unit will be in salt or fresh water.

Performance Marine has recommended aluminum for salt and brackish. Les may have them. It is actually an aluminum alloy. I have had very good luck with them.
