I just bought a hand held radio that has gps and supports mmsi for distress calls. The question is, it appears that you just pick a 9 digit number as the mmsi code. I assume the code is for identification purposes? I'm just not clear if there is any rhyme or reason for the number I am to enter. If someone could help educate me on how that system works, I would be appreciative.

Thanks currentsea. I was actually just signing back on to say never mind. I was just on boatus and read through it.

SeaTow also offers free MMSI registration and service as well.

Just to clarify things, that MMSI is only good for state-side boating. If you leave the country you need one from FCC as other countries do not share with BoatUS or SeaTow, but they do with NOAA.

(before anybody jumps on me, we have plenty of BE members from Canada as well as US-based boaters that go to Canada and the Bahamas).

Ours is from FCC, not NOAA.

D'oh! Good point. I edited my post to reflect FCC instead of NOAA. I guess I was thinking about the PLBs/EPIRB registration via NOAA.

Thanks for reminding me Kurt I need to update my PLBs and EPIRBs on-line.

Bill, I get notices every year from NOAA a bout re-registering our PLBs. The registration is good for 2 years, but they want me to renew every year. Go figure.

Mine are overdue just past 2 years. I also need to update some of the contact information.
I'll be doing it today.

I won't be taking this gas pig to the Bahamas or Canada so the US only generated MMSI is fine for me.
I sure wish I would have installed small diesels.
