Hi all,
I need some advice - I'm taking the boat to Fire Island from Aquebogue next week and I was wondering if the markers in Moriches have changed since last year? I did the trip inside last year; it took more than 2.5 hours because of the no wake zones and our lack of familiarity with Moriches Bay - but i do have the route marked.... Also, I was thinking that if the weather was good, I could travel outside through Shinnecock Inlet and come back in at Moriches Inlet, but have no familiarity with Moriches Inlet, other than that it is very tricky to navigate. Any thoughts, suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

I'm heading that way too. Wouldn't mind getting a recent update.

I will be also sometime in July. But I can't say when ;-)

Gerry, I have your WHB information in my briefcase, but have not seen you on the train.

Brad, thanks. Supervision is in London so I have been enjoying the 7:21. Tomorrow it will be the 6:32 likely. I have already set things up with Frank for 8/12 - 16, having gone on line. Your referral made him an instant friend although he expressed surprise at you having friends. When are arrival/departure times?

Until recent check in and out we're based on high tide. Frank may create check in and out times, now that Moriches was dredged. But not sure if created them yet.

Guys, Moriches was a cake walk. Its almost back to being a straight line. Blew tru there 8:30 thursday am and it was a pleasure. No fishing aholes, no issues. Enjoy ur trips guys and most of all be safe !

I spoke with Frank at WHB about this last week or so ago and he may be doing a 3 hour window. But will need to keep current with the conditons and adjust. He is a very fair guy and will always use safty first as the guide.

Rob thanks for the information, should be doing the run in about three weeks.

Rob - thanks so much for the update - heading out tomorrow morning, I appreciate the report! - Mary

I took the trip on Saturday and got nervous since it was too easy. The channel is marked well and straight . There was about 8 fishing boats right next to marker 26 and I had to come down off plane. I was watching the depth and I will no longer worry about tides while traveling this area. Df showed about 8 feet at the spot where the dog leg used to be.

ENJOY my friend......see you when we get back .

Like Rob said, Moriches is a cake walk now. I went through 2 hours after coast guard station high tide and never saw less than 7'. The only part that caused me to slow down was the area that has a big sand bar to the south (forget the buoya #'s). This area has a red buoy and a green buoy very close together. The day I went through, i was not sure if those were the right buoys, but they are correct. The water in this area was so clear that I thought the sand bar went across this channel, but it didn't. It was 10 feet deep between the buoys, but I could see the sand and shells at the bottom. Amazingly clear green/blue water.

I saved the track from great south bay to Westhampton beach town marina, but have no clue how to transfer it. I have a Garmin 3210. If anyone can tell me how to copy the route and wants it, let me know.

The only thing I would say is, check on status of this new moriches route and assume these conditions could change quickly. For now, it is too easy!

If there are any updates this week, please post and if you can take a pic of your route from #17 or 18 it would be helpful. You can e-mail me a .jpeg at bgroener at optonline dot net.

I have the Garmen 2010 and transfer my routes to a user card that looks just like your map card then I upload to my PC Mapsource software and merge into my saved routes then upload to my GPS. But a picture would be fine if you can do it. If not I am sure it will be an easy run. After all, Linda and I have doing the moving dog leg for 10 years.

We are heading to WHB town dock then Shinnecock Marina north of the locks later this week.

Thanks

Brad

We went through this past weekend. Going it was 1 hour before low tide. Once you get to #26 its a straigh shot across. There is no more "Dog Leg". We had no less then 5' of water under the boat after #26. You will need to watch yourself at #17 and make sure you in the middle of #18 and #19 we only had 2-3' under the boat. Coming home it was 2 hour after high tide and there was plenty of water.

Have a safe trip.
