Anybody hear any news about Moriches Bay buoys - channel? Someone told me that the dredging project was a complete waste of time and money, the sand filled back in and that the buoys are in the same general spots as last year.

Why can't they build a canal thru the bad area. Line it with navy bulkhead, dredge it, done.
Dreding wide open sand will keep filling in. There is only really one spot that is bad, the rest is cake.
That spot is fine as long as your on plane.

I was through a couple of weeks ago and yes, the buoys were in the same place. You could see where the dredging had been done but without any markers (and the way it looked) I was not going in there.

So, after all the trouble we had last year on this we're back to square one?

The buoys in Moriches Bay have now been changed to reflect the dredged channel. I have not been through as we were heading east but I spoke to Sea Tow and was told the buoys now reflect the old channel from years ago and the lowest depth reading he saw was 4 1/2 ft. has anyone been through the new channel yet?

Vic

I just made reservations for West Hampton Beach Town Marina for the end of July. I spoke with Frank the marina manager and he advised me he has had some large boats come and go without issue. They have moved the buoys as Vic states above. The rule for check in/out at WHB was the high tide, now he may have create actual times like other Marinas. The concern that I have is the dredging could shoal over rather quickly. It was contracted at I believe 7 feet and now at high tide I was told it is 5 or 6 feet. But that is hard to measure accurately though the entire area. It would be nice to just go from #18 straight to WHB.

Brad, how long does it take on average to get to WHB marina from Bay Shore?

Gerry

Obviosuly depends on conditions and speed.
But if your crusing at a solid 20 knots I would say about a hour or so.

Gerry with the super fast silvertons we have figure the whole day!

For me leaving Babylon and running at an avg 23MPH(not knots) it is around 2 hours give or take. I used to alow about 1.5hr's to get to the dog leg by the USCG station just before high tide. It is only about 20 minutes from there. Now from what I was told, we may not have to worry about that, at least for this season. I am not sure about you, but some larger boats have to open the Smithpoint bridge. Also the Beach Lane? (I forget thename) bridge at WHB before the town marina.

I believe the bridge before the Westhampton marina when heading East is Jessup Lane.

Also be careful if you plan on heading further east than Westhampton up the canal - the next bridge is east is Beach Lane and this past weekend it was broken and was only able to open one side.

Vic

I spoke with Boat US today and was told the channel is very very narrow between 17 to 20 and then again between 26 to 30, you are either in it or high and dry. The fishermen have decided to take over the channel in those areas too, but do not yield to them (his words). The dog leg has been taken out, just a slight arc and very well marked.
As for the inlet, on a flat day it's ok from the West approach, not so good from the East especially with any kind of swell/breakers starts at about 8 feet before any wave action.

Vic,
That bridge often only opens the south side. I think its the operator messing with us.... He also never fully opens either and starts closing way to early .... Just my 2 cents

Rob

Does anyone know the three bridges names bewtween WHB and the last one before Tiana Bay ? I have them written down somewhere on the boat so when I call for an opening I get it right. But never can find the paper when I need it. So I always call the first bridge Beach Lane, but I beleive it is the second.

Do you phone for the opening or use the radio? If the latter, what channel?

Thanks,
Gerry

Heading east
1) William Floyd Parkway Bridge or CR 46 Bridge - http://marinas.com/view/bridge/250_Cr-46_Bascule_Bridge_Shirley_NY
2) Jessup Lane Bridge - http://marinas.com/view/bridge/293_Jessup_Lane_Bascule_Bridge_Westhampton_Beach_NY
3) Beach Lane Bridge - http://marinas.com/view/bridge/244_Beach_Lane_Bascule_Bridge_Westhampton_Beach_NY

I think it is 9 or 13, sign tells you when you get close.

Bridge courtesy is if there is other boats coming up on the bridge from either direction is to wait for them, so operator opens once! Don't keep hailing him. Trust me, he see's you, unless he is sleeping! Also know your clearance, at low tide, alot of express boats don't need the bridge open but will sit there and wait for it to open.
