So, ever since starting on the 58' trawler project we've had this bird problem. The wheelhouse is still window-less and has very attractive angle iron roof beams that came with abandoned mud nests when I got the boat. I cleaned out the nests as part of the overall boat clean-up. Come this Spring, the birds have come back and have rapidly been rebuilding. Aside from the fact that they don't much like company and can get pretty fiesty, I've let them have their space for awhile. However, we're going to move the boat soon, and I figure I'll be really messing with their whole procreation process by doing so. My theory thus far has been to keep cleaning out the nests to encourage them to move on, but it's not working. They are persistant and rapid nesters! This may only be a problem for me, because I care about these little devils, aside from the incredible amount of mud they bring aboard. Any advice??? Should I just keep knocking down their nests? Will they move with the boat (from Bay Point to Richmond). Am I nuts for caring?????

Well, you are sorta nuts for caring 'cause those starlings won't be extinct any time soon! A few less eggs hatched won't effect things in the long run. However, it seems very cold hearted on a personal level! There is some bird netting you can purchase at HD, Lowes, Ace, etc which comes in a roll. It is designed to keep birds from eating the fruit growing on trees, etc. You could secure a bunch of this to "close off" the openings and soon they will find a more accessible location----hopefully not on your boat!

Don't forget to keep us updated with pics of your project boat! Where at BI will it be slipped? You're not going to anchor it in Fishermans' Cut, are you!!!!!! JK

Yes Charlie, although at the moment I'm not sure if it will be Pt. Richmond Pirate Harbor or Marina Bay -- but definitely one of the two.

If you're in a covered berth, I have seen one guy on our dock hang old CD's on a string from the girders. The wind blows the CD's around and the movement supposedly keeps the birds away. I don't know if it works, but his boat sure looks clean.

Fisherman's Cut. That's too funny. If it's too crowded there, don't forget Mayberry Slough.
