In two week, the family and I are staying two nights at mystic shipyard and one night at mystic seaport. Looking for any scoop on things to do, places to see, restaurants etc. The usual cruising guide stuff. Places are part of our annual club cruise, but I don't know that much about them.

I know the seaport is behind a bridge and the shipyard has a pool. Any beaches within dingy reach worth visiting. Will have my 4 kids with us.
 
Prospective, if you haven't been, definitely take in the aquarium. It will be a short cab ride. Lots of good restaurants by the drawbridge in the center of town. The seaport, obviously is very interesting

Next to the aquarium is a bunch of gift shops and interesting stores if that is something of interest. It's a really cute town. I work in Groton so I entertain business colleagues there occasionally and have work events in the area.

Oen other place that comes to mind if yuo liek seafood, mostly fried is Abbot's lobster on the rough. It's in Noank and have never been there but it is noted for it's seafood. It's basically a big seafood shack. It might be reachable by dinghy
 
Stayed at the seaport museum last year with my wife and 5 year old son. He loved the seaport so did we. We actually walked to the aquarium. Definitely take the cab ride on the way back at least, kids will be whining otherwise.
 
The downtown bridge opens on a schedule once an hour as I recall, but not one the hour. The train bridge before it also appreciates a call; it remains open but closes fairly regularly for trains. I'll second Daniel Packer, too.
 
You will have a great trip. There is so much to do. Dinking is great around here. Just out of curiosity, why two different places so close together? My marina is almost directly across the river from the shipyard. If you fishing, the strippers have running pretty good up here lately. In town there are more restaurants to chose than you will need. As appealing as S&P may be when you see and smell it, I would not waste the money. It is a tourist trap. Daniel Packer is awsome. Also Have the Voodoo Grill. It has a Cajun theme to it. Good food and very reasonable. If you are looking for a real nice place, try Azu or Bravo Bravo. Both are very good. The Harp and Hound is a small pub and most places have live entertainment on the weekends. the bridge in town opens at 40 minutes past the hour and thats it. You have to time that.
 
Second Daniel Packer Inn. If you fish, take your ding to Abbotts In the Rough and drop some clam crackers on a hook. The stripers are used to people feeding them. Friend got a 42 in last week.
 
We go to Mystic just about every year.
I also recommend the Daniel Packer.
You can use your dink as a taxi- there is a dink dock just south of the bascule bridge in the heart of town.

The S&P is not that bad & if you have the right slip they’ll deliver to the boat. ;-)

S&P isnt that bad, just with all the other great choices, why waste the money on a tourist trap?. I must say though, I do love the smell of the place. Every weekend I take the dink up river and look forward to the smell.
 
Good question on the two different places. It's part of our club cruise and the shipyard didn't have room for all of us so we're moving for one night.

Sounds like the Daniel Packer is worth a visit. We have a group dinner at the Seaman's Inn.

We've done the aquarium by car before so I don't think we'll hit that unless the weather is lousey.

Sounds like Dink Transport is a good option, any beaches near by?

One of the things my kids enjoyed was walking around the seaport at night. At night it is closed to visitors (but not to you on a boat) and it is like being transporting back in time. Spooky. Mystic Pizza is usually too crowded but kids like to say they have seen the place in the movie "Mystic Pizza". We always visit the seashell shop. No place to beach that I know of but I seem to recall people taking their dingy in shallow water and frolicking about.
 
It is a short cruise around to the anchorage off Napatree Beach; fun spot. Smaller boats also use the sand bar as you go in to Watch Hill/ Napatree from Stonington.
 
I`ll second the Napatree beach /Sandy point combo if you are looking for a beach, they are the best around. sandy Point is about 6 miles from the mouth of the Mystic River so you will need to take the big boat, but bring the dink, you may not want to go back to Mystic.....
