Went up the busy Mystic River last weekend and met some friends on their boat at anchor. Going up the river and clearing the bridges is a pain but up past the highway bridge, we anchored in the shallow water, beyond the last marker, and past the seaport. We met our friends for dinner on our boat and had a wonderful meal as the sun went down. We chatted on into the night, after which our friends left by inflatable for their boat.

This is close to home for us, as we dock in Norwich CT, but it has always turned out to be one of the best cruises of the year.

We get to sit together after our guests have left. We watch the fish jump. We look at the stars. We talk about old times, when we were younger.

Boating doesn't get much better than this.

Sounds nice, very nice. Is the Mystic River navigable up beyond Rt. 95? And if so, is that the area to which you are referring? Or are you referring to about up as far as the cemetery?

We love Mystic. It is always our first and last trip of the year. We love it sooo much that we are actually taking a slip on the Mystic River next year

We were there then too. Stayed at Ft. Rachael Marina. From there, you could walk to town. Bill - we saw your boat, but didn't know it was you. Also had one of the best times for '08 - took the ding way up the river past the 95 bridge. Past that point, only boats with shallow draft can make it. We didn't know that you could anchor just past the Seaport, next time we will drop hook there.

Listened to the Jazz Music at the Seaport on Sunday from our ding - enjoying some shrimp cocktail. Very nice!

Spike-

My fathers boat was in Seaport Marine in Mystic all summer, the bow of his boat was just about where your first picture was taken from. We were over in Westerly, but would make the 10 minute trip over so my son could see them on weekends.

What a great town Mystic is, really something for everyone.

Spike,

Great to know that you where that weekend. We often anchor up there and sometimes go aground, gently at low tide. No problem when the tide changes. It is a fine place to anchor.

We met friends on their boat and had a great cocktail hour and dinner together. We hosted dinner (I love it when all the lights are on and the Admirals are cooking in my galley, as small as it is.) We went to sleep in that wonderful cove and I only got up once to check the anchor.

In the morning, we brewed some coffee and later went to breakfast at that little place north of the museum. Somehow, me, who never eats breakfast, sucked up enough carbs to last me for a year. Nice looking out and seeing our boats out there at anchor. We took a walk, and took in whatever Mystic had to offer.

Eventually, we hauled up the anchor, not an easy task with all the crud. We missed the bridge by 35 minutes but spent that time letting the Admiral practice backing up and turning around in the channel just north of the bridge. After 18 years, she's getting the hang of it. I hope.

See you next year

Bill

So... what's the best marina in Mystic close enough to walk to everything WITH floating docks?

cc67, SOunds like a great time !

I Filled my fuel tank at NSY at the mouth of the river for 3.95 per/gal on my way out last week. I only took 403 gals :)

It really is a great place and home to my folks. I'm hoping to make it back there this weekend and was wondering if they have any moorings I could grab for an over night if I decide to stay ? I might decide to stay at a marina also... I prefer floaters also and need 50 amp power. Maybe it will be just a day trip.

The Brewer Yard has floating docks. It is about 15-20 minutes into town though. Pretty nice place. I will be there Friday and Saturday night myself. It is my last trip of the year. I think that the majority of the other marinas are fixed docks. If you have a dink, It is a short trip up river to the town dingy dock.

Mystic Shipyard has new floating docks just North of the railroad. Its about a five minute walk to the bridge in town.
