I was recently in Ocean City, NJ, and downloaded an app called Navionics for my 'droid. WOW! How cool. It's like GPS for the boat. It laid out the channels like a road map. One question: Sometimes the depths were shown with a subscript number, for example, 6 with a "9" subscript. What does that mean?
 
I have the same program and think its great as well. I plot my course on this prior to on boat unit as it is so easy and fast and then use it as a back-up. I also was wondering the same.
 
Are you speaking of the number next to the depth like in this example? If so, it means 16.4 feet. If you drag your chart to the center of the cross-hairs then hit the ? mark, it'll display the actual depth. Or are you talking about the "275"?

Yes, the 16.4. That's kinda overly accurate, isn't it? most of the numbers had a "9" as the subscript. Are they really saying the depth is 6.9 feet and not just 7 feet?
 
Yep, that's what they mean...figured they could have just rounded up...or down. :-)
 
I find this hard to believe. 3.9 feet instead of 4? 5.9 feet instead of 6? 9.8 feet???
 
Here's another theory. I think the soundings are measured in meters and stored as such on my phone. When I change my settings of the app to display feet or fathoms, the app does some math to convert, and it rounds to the nearest tenth (if viewing by feet) or nearest foot (if viewing by fathom). When I switch to meters, that 5.9 sounding near the blue push pin now reads 1.8, which, if you do the math, is correct. When I switch to fathoms, the number turns to 1, which, if my theory was correct, should change to 0.98, but since it's rounding to the nearest foot, .98 would round to just 1.

So I think it's an app math rounding error thing.
 
Ahh, I think I figured out why.

The program for some measurements in this app, may have been converted from "meters". For example, 3 meters is 9.8 feet. The conversion to feet would display the additional measurement.

I looked at this on my laptop and it is cool.
When you view it on the cellphone can it display your position?
 
"Water depths are indicated by these black numbers. When they are located close to an aid to navigation care must be taken to identify them properly. Water depths on charts can be measured in feet, fathoms, or meters. The units of measurement are usually stated in large format on the edges of charts. Sometimes you'll see a number for depth written 32 for example. Right away, you know this chart does not use feet as its unit of measurement. If the chart units are meters you know the depth here is 3.2 meters. If the chart units are fathoms you know the depth here is 3 fathoms plus 2 feet for a total of 20 feet."

The 32 mentioned in the above is a reference to when you see a 3 with a 2 offset down and to the right of it.

Yes, it uses the phone's GPS. VERY COOL.
 
Ok since were asking questions . I have the navionics app on my android and ipad. When I zoom in everything gets smaller. YEs the map larger . Buoys and all the depths get smaller. I see u guys posting these pics and I'm like WTF Mine does not look like that ... I need my glasses on when I zoom.... IS there a setting not to auto sync or something ?

Rob, same problem for me. When I zoom, if I keep my fingers on the screen, I can read the depths, but as soon as I let go, the numbers shrink down to almost unreadable. The screen shots above are just so high in resolution that they blow up nicely and you can read them, but viewing on the phone is tough. I wish it had a setting for font size, but it doesn't. Maybe the HD version does - I just have the regular version.
