I do check the alignment with a Sierra alignment bar that works on Merc Volvo (SX) and OMC Cobra...all manuals recommend that you do this whenever the drive is removed and it USUALLY doesn't change (I've checked my Cobra each year the past few seasons) but if you start getting rot in an engine mount stringer they tend to get worse over time as the rot progreses and then when it gets really bad it can be a problem that will ruin the coupler because of mis-alignment...
for 8K if they are Alphas that is plain crazy you could get new Merc drives and based on what is said about the SEI drives that may be the way to go...but I'd want a second opinion first..My mechanic still rebuilds drives in his shop but the price of SEIs being what it is a lot of techs do not rebuild Alphas anymore...not when the new SEI could be 1/2 the price of a rebuild..
