I have a 2001 Mercury 225 EFI that until recently has been purring like a kitten. The last time out I was cruising at 4300 rpm or so, and the engine suddenly lost rpms. If I was quick enough to pull the throttle back, I could give it gas and it would pick back up to speed just fine. If I was a little slow with the throttle, the engine cut off, but would start right back up. This happened repeatedly, sometimes after a few minutes, sometimes after we had gone 5 miles or so. I checked my fuel/water separator and it was full of water, but the problem continued after I emptied the filter.
I was thinking initially it sounded like a fuel problem, a pinched line, clogged in-line filter, condensed water in the tank/line or something. But as fast as the engine lost rpms it really felt more like an electrical glich. A friend suggested it could be an ignition module?? Any of you guys with more mechanical knowledge than I have any suggestions??
