I Just put a deposit on a 28ft Sea Ray at Marinemax in White Marsh and need a reputable surveor in the area. I live in NY (LI) so I wouldn't know of any. Suggestions?

I've used Joyce Nolen. She's done good by me.

I had Al Prisco take the ride down for me. I was quite pleased, and the travel time wasn't that bad.

I'll recommend Lon Acheson. I used him about 5 years ago and I know MikeeH used him as well.
He's a good guy and VERY thorough. He's near Annapolis.
Here's his website: http://www.survtech.us/

MikeeH,

Is this the surveyor who inspected your last boat? Didn't you blow one of your drives on the way home?

Nope Al, that wasn't Lon. Lon surveyed our Carver when it was at Kent Island, MD, across from Annapolis. The surveyor who did the Silverton up at LIYC was from the LI South Shore.

Al, so if you you would have done the survey the drive would not have blown. Tell me how you would have would have discovered this. I am tired of you bashing other survey.

I apologize for the misspelling. I sent the email in the heat of the moment. I have listened to this crap for to long and said nothing, I can’t do it anymore.

Petesl, Im glad you have stood up and questioned me on this one. Ive been surveying vessels for a very long time. My vessels that i survey are inspected with the up most care. Getting back to your question.I would have done a complete fluid analysis on all machinery on board. I would have run the vessel under load conditions just before they where sampled. A complete table of elements would have told me if a drive was ready to give way. Call it a bashing if you like. My clients go into a room with the lights on. Just ask any of them.

So moderators of forums get to advertise their business websites but the rest of us can't even post our personal boating websites? Nice.

Les, can I get a 2-year refund?

mixman, I have been donating my time here for the last seven years. I don't get paid for my time here. Do you think its so unfair for me to have my website posted on a forum that i keep up with 365 days a year? If you knew me better, i don't think you would feel the way you do.

Kurt,

In fairness to Al, when I was purchasing the Silverton I asked the folks on LI for surveyor recommendations. I also contacted Al. I norrowed my choices down to Al or another surveyor who also came highly recommended. Al is not located on LI but the other recommended surveyor was local to the area so I went with the local guy.

Now, back to the blown tranny, the surveyor did run it under load and did all that would be expected but no fluid analysis. The authorized repair facility and the insurance compant surveyor both agreed that the tranny failure was the result of "impact". So, let's leave that incident out of this discussion,

Sorry Al, but with your attitude, I don't think I really want to know you any better. I'll stay out of your forum for your convenience.

Al, if you think a oil sample would tell you if a drive is/or not sound, you are wrong.

Petesl, A fluid sample will only give you a heads up on a preexisting problem, Even if the fluid was just changed. Load testing and thermal imaging show live data results as well. With the type testing i do, i feel confer dent when i rate the condition of any machinery inspected. I take my inspections to the next level. I hope you dont feel like im trying to offend anyone when i describe whats included in my inspections, im just very much into what i do. I feel like more professionals should invest more effort in there equipment and there educations to best serve there clients.

I wound up choosing an accredited surveyor from the area named Ken Henry. I have to say it was one of the most thorough and educational surveys I have ever had. He spent 4 hours with me going over every system and every facet of the boat. He not only pointed out any potential issues but explained how evety system worked and what preventative maintenance I should consider. He has been surveying for 30 years, builds boats and has spent his whole life on the water. Boat surveyed out excellent by the way. I would definitely recommend him to any in need of a survey in MD.
