We're ready to move to a diesel / trawler type boat. Bayliner 3888 looks interesting. Anybody had luck using their existing boat to negotiate a trade ? Our 38 Chris gasser is a great boat, but we like to travel, and diesel is just logical move. Any suggestions similar in size to the Bayliner ??

The Bayliner 3888 can not be compared to a Gulfstar. The newer diesel powered 3888 is a loaded well built boat there's some debate if it's a really a trawler. But there's hardly any debate that it's a well built diesel powered cruiser.

We owned a 1986 - 38 Bayliner with 175 Hino's for about 5 seasons and it was just about the most boat for the money we have ever encountered. Sold it around 15+ years ago and just ran into the person we sold it to at Townsends Marina a year ago who said - "all I have done is change the oil and basic things and it keeps running real well".
At the time I bought the 38 I had made up a list of all the other boats considered but for our use there was really no direct competition - of course one of our 'needs' was to be able to travel at 15-16 knots at the least.
If you make your list of needs and compare it to the 38 Bay perhaps it will come out on top as well.
But it is getting much harder to find these in decent shape over the past few years.

39 is a much better boat. The fly bridge is sits on top of a fiberglass structure. You can run the boat from the lower station without losing viability due to viability being hindered by the foredeck. You'll find B Block Cummins power. If you buy a 38 don't go below 175 hp hino.
