Hello again,

I am preparing to mount a pair of Stainless Flush Mount Gunnel rod holders. I am unsure of the proper angle to get. I see 0 degree, 15 degree, and 30 degree.

I plan to mount my electric Penn 835 Downrigger on the flush mount with the http://www.pennreels.com/01_products/downrigger/downrigger.htm Penn 632 or 634 Quick Mount. Unfortunately, the Penn website does not list the angle of the quick mount... If it did, I would just match the angle of the quick mount to the flush mount I purchase.

Questions:
1. Which Angle 0/15/30 degrees?
2. Which Brand - solid enough to work with downrigger? e.g. C.E. Smith, etc...

Thank you for your help!
Jeff

Any ideas on a good brand name, apparently 30 degree angle is best???

Hi Jeffmit,

You're going to fish on your new Regal??? Yikes!!! So far, I guess we do everything but fish with our Regal.. :) sorry I can't offer any tips..

I'm guessing that there may be other Regal owners who fish, so hopefully someone can offer a reply to your questions.
Good luck with your new boat.. :)

Well, I fish off my Regal! Coho, kings, & lakers.

I do not have flush mount rod holders, though. I have 2 Proos swivel mounts thru bolted to the gunnel (1 each side) and mount my downriggers, with rod holders, to the mounts when needed.

Yes, I'd feel much safer with 30 degree angle.

Hi Steve,

Are there any perch in your area???

My Dad used to take us perch fishing on Lake Erie all the time when we were kids.. thus I'm probably all fished out!!! :)

Just curious, here I would typically need to get an Ohio fishing license, but looking at the map of your area, you have Indiana, Michigan and Illinois... how do you manage that? Do you get fishing license's in all 3 states for proper coverage? Just curious.

Thanks,

Sure, lots of perch, but I don't fish for them. I have a few times, but prefer the BIG'uns. :)

Yes, technically, I would need all 3 IF I fished in their respective waters. I TRY to limit my fishing to Indiana waters only, but have been known to enter Michigan---shhhh! Spring & fall are quite enough for me, and IN has enough fish then. Mid-summer, I'd need to go to MI to find them, but that's beach & play time. I've never gotten near Illinois water fishing.

Steve,

Thanks for the interesting info.. my grandfather was a commercial fisherman on Lake Erie, but passed away in 1964. I remember going out to see him on the lake in the wood boat my Dad built.. I still have that boat at home in the garage... I restored it back in 1988 but it hasn't seen the water since maybe 1992 or so.. Someday, I'd like to get her back in the water again, but will need to find a tow vechicle to do so.

Thanks All - so here is a summary of what I have learned. I still have a question below, perhaps someone knows?
1. 30 degrees is the angle I will choose
2. Q: What brand of flush mount rod holder will withstand the saltwater and downrigger weight?

Thanks
Jeff

My opinion:

Brand isn't as important as material & construction. Personally, I'd go stainless.

Never having had flush rod holders, I'd think the thickness if the gunnel would be the deciding factor as to weight & strain. Any way to strengthen the bottom part of the rod holder? (Eliminate the "pivot" effect)
