Just bought a 1980 33 Mariner. It needs some engine work and the survey showed a few things to be corrected, but no show-stoppers - so we took the plunge. It'll be nice to have the added room. We have an express cruiser now and it's getting a little cramped with all the time we spend on it.

I'll probably be looking for advice as I continue the rehab, so ... any other 33 owners out there?
 
welcome aboard and be sure to post pictures when you can. we love pictures.
 
My brother in law had a '78 33 Mariner, I have an 86. Great roomy boats and efficient hulls. Great for entertaining too and not bad for fishing. Congrats!
 
I had a bunch of photos on my little point-and-shoot and realized today that they're gone ... especially embarassing considering I used to be a professional photographer! I'll be going to the yard tomorrow to go over the repairs and I'll be shooting some more, if the weather cooperates. I've always like the way Carver does interiors, really making them much larger than they appear from the outside. Folks in my marina (and in the clubs I belong to) think they're ugly. I don't know, I guess beauty is subjective, right, 'cause I've always liked their 'uniqueness'.

By the way, we're going to rename her 'Nostromo' and, yes, we're going to do the whole renaming ceremony thing. Not that we're superstitious, really, but I don't think it'll hurt. OK now, without doing a Google or Wikipedia search - how many of you know where that name comes from???
 
Congratulations on the 33 Mariner. Probably the biggest 33 footer out there, and I'm sure you'll love the room!

did the naming ceremony twice so far with no ill effects. lucky for me, the sea folk like the cheap stuff.
 
I didn't use the "renaming ceremony"...I feel scared now!
 
LOL! The last two owners of my current boat both died. So before we bought it I asked my wife how superstitious she was. Then again, I almost died BEFORE I bought it, and just recently was fortunate enough to have the potential trouble caught before it put me in danger. So maybe that boat has finally escaped the jinx...
 
Welcome and very nice Pics. The "renaming ceremony" do not skip that step in the boat buying process. Many tools were sacrificed to Davy Jones prior to renaming ceremony the fewer after the ceremony.

LOL, nice pics! I'm laughing because my boat has that same whacky interior fabric. Carver sure had strange tastes back in 1980, although its not as bad as some styles I saw from Bayliner back then...

That material they used is quite durable, though! Our interior cushions really cleaned up nice and should last quite awhile yet. The curtains came out really nice too after I took 'em off and threw them in the washing machine. Alas, the orangy brown rugs our boat came with are gross and are on my list to get rid of before Spring comes this year...

Good luck with the "Nostromo". Just stay away from Sigourney Weaver, will ya???
 
Actually, my wife was thinking of naming her the 'Ellen Ripley', but that was too geeky even for me ;>. Yeah, the fabric is not my cup of tea either, although it's in great shape. That's one of the (many) thinks on our todo list - getting all of it redone. My wife can't live with that hideous design!
 
If you've got a lot of other things to do on that boat, I would tell her to live with the screwy upholstery for awhile. It'll last, and replacing it is gonna cost significant money. So enjoy the fact that Carver did a good job on its upholstery and put the money to better use fixing other things on the boat, IMHO...

And live in the solace that there is at least one other family out here "suffering" with that same decor ;) ...
 
I had the blue velvet type of fabric. It was complete with cig burns.. had to go... I still have the nice sea shell curtains to keep me remembering the 80's though.
 
Ok, the boat is now in the water! We started the cleaning process - trying to get rid of 28 years of neglect. The vinyl is so dirty I wonder if we'll ever really get it clean. We may be looking at replacing it, but that's not going to be a 'this year' project. The engine work is substantially done, but I need to have both carbs rebuilt. Probably won't be ready for testing until next week. We completely redid the head - new toilet, new hoses, new holding tank - the ones we had were leaking (yuck!). My wife is really excited to have a fresh head! I think we'll be cleaning for while, but we spent the weekend aboard and absolutely love the extra room we have.

The rehab continues .....
 
Ahhh, yes. I am reminiscing as I read your post - been there, done that!!!
