I want to install free chartware on my new computer. I used open captain on my old pc but loading all the charts was a PITA. Is there anything today that is easier to download charts?

Hi, Bruce,

Yes, I use OpenCPN a lot for planning and as a backup to my Garmin chartplotter. I like it very much. I agree that loading and sync'ing the charts can be a chore, but for me it's more of [re]learning curve thing. Once I dust off my recollection when I need to download a chart, I'm good to go. I plan to keep using it.

Thanks Bill. I was hoping for better news that someone had fixed the issues. It has been 4 years since I did it last so all I remember is the pita.

I haven't used a pc based charting program in 2 or 3 years now having switchd to ipad but the last one I used was polar navy which I prefered over OpenCPn

Both were easy to install, I don't recall any difficulty installing the charts... Just download them and put them in the right dir.

Thanks pascal but putting them in the right dir is the problem. The instructions are clear right up to the point where it say go find charts and install them.:(I will check polar navy.

Pascal, How and what do you use with your Ipad. I have a samsung tab and I'd like to use it as a larger screen for the chart-plotter.

I have an inspection camera but haven't been able to connect it either. No video. Any special app?

I ve ben using Garmin Blue charts for two years now and love it. The charts are great, the accuracy witht the iPad built in gos is as good as the marine stuff. Fully water proof with a lifeproof case (I had the Nuud version which deisgn have a screen protector. Has built in active captain support. Down side is ok full sunlight readability and you can leave it in direct sunlight or it will shut down due to heat.

So the Ipad isn't directly connected to you chart plotter? It functions as an independent plotter?

Yeah much better this gives me full redundancy,

Last night we threaded the needle in pitch dark down in the exumas to get to an anchorage (had to have some tide). I was running both the on board furuno and my iPad, no worries if either one woudl crash.... Different receiver, different power supply (obviously as the iPad is on battery)

And my iphone on stand by,... :)
