This is my port engine's first run. I haven't finished installing the components for the new starboard engine yet. Both engines are new and all cooling system components are brand new. It runs well but please take a look at the second video link also.

There is fresh water leaking from the lower and upper riser studs where riser mates with the manifold. I have taken back apart, scraped clean again and replaced with new gaskets and block off plate as my other engine. There is no leak between components (manifold and riser) but water is traveling down the stud. Anyone ever see this before? May have to contact Barr again...

Did you "deck" the mating surfaces before assembling the new cast exhaust parts? That may not be your leak problem (maybe a casting issue?), but Crusader includes an instruction sheet with their replacement riser/elbows saying you must do this. They may look very flat, but if you use a marker to cover the surfaces and start to make passes with a sharp flat mill file, you will quickly see why they say to deck them.
When I checked with Crusader long ago I think they recommended on the order of 27(?)ft.-lbs. for the studs and bolts.,

Geo VanP recommended a thin even coat of Permatex Ultra Black sealer on the gaskets as a little insurance. I've experimented with and without, no leaks either way. Are you using the nice graphite gaskets on either side of the block off plates if that is where the leak is?

Jamie, Same setup as mine. All new copper washers and nuts. Only way to stop leaks was to use Permatex thread sealer on threads before installing nuts.

The mating surfaces are completely free of paint and material. I did not put a flat edge to it, only because in the past with the Osco manifolds and risers, I've never had an issue.

I may end up removing and applying some Black Ultra RTV around the holes and retesting.

Jmas, are you saying you too, experienced this leak? This would be a simply fix...

Do the mounting bolts go into the water jacket of the riser?

I would put silicone around threads and copper washer

Flat tappet or roller? ...concerning cam break-in.
 
Charlie, don't think the stud threads go into the water jacket. The motor is a flat tappet cam, 4 bolt main, 2 piece rear main seal small block. Pre Vortec...

Funny thing is, the manufacturer always states, don't use thread sealants or RTV. You try to do the clean install and end up using it any way!
 
Yep, had the same thing, pull the studs back out, use permatex non hardening sealant on the threads, and reinstall with copper washers, problem solved...........D...........

Jamie, Exactly same problem. Remove one nut at a time,use permatex non hardening sealant on the threads, and reinstall nut. Re-tighten nuts.
 
I applied RTV to the threads last night as you guys suggested, ran it this morning and all is well!

Nice receiving help from those who have been there, done that. And that, was exactly what I was looking for.

Much appreciated!
