Hit the show last night with a couple of friends. They are sailors so I had to introduce them to the wonders of the modern power boat. Thought I would pass along some of my thoughts since it's 29 degrees outside and I am day dreaming about boating....

Tuesday night is a great time to go. The new convention ceter is beautiful and there could not have been more than 500 people in the whole place. No lines, no crowds, and the sales people were, for the most part, laid back and helpful. Saw a ton of boats and managed to drink a beer in the process. A good night.

The Sea Ray guy cracked me up. I did not have nice things to say about these guys at the Newport show. But the one at boston was funny. As we walked on a 48 Dancer and commented on the $879k boatshow price tag, he jokingly said "If you sign a deal tonight, I'll knock it down to $875k and throw in a sea ray hat." Good, I like a sence of hummor. Then we hear claping and cheering in the sea ray tent. He said someone must have closed on a deal. Then the claping and cheering got a bit louder. He dead panned that they must have paid full price!

48 Dancer.. Now this is a nice boat. I loved the hardtop with full glass windscreen and the slide out helm chairs to open up the cockpit. The guest stateroom is huge and the interior is nicely laid out. This was my dreamboat pick of the show. Liked it more than the 52 Dancer that was next to it. And although I prefer the sedan bridge layout, this was nicer than the 44 Sedan Bridge on the other side.

Silverton 36C.. I've been on these a couple of times now and they continue to impress. I am not a good judge of the little things but overall this boat just feels right. The exterior, the layout, power options, price, etc. I like it each time I see it. I could own this boat.

Regal 4080.. Have seen these on the internet a bunch but never in person. Finally got my chance. Rommer, this is a really nice boat and did not disappoint. I see why you're an advocate. Attractive, nice layout, good quality AND value. The boat at the show was a 2006 left over (gas power) that they were selling for about $265k. It was $349k for an '08. The sales guy I talked to was not too sharp though. When I asked him the difference between this and the 3080 he had no idea. He was also off by 4' on the LOA even though he was standing right next to a giant sign with the number right on it. Oh well, not his night I guess

Cobalt 46.. A builder known for high quality smaller boats, this thing was off the hook. I Boarded hull number 5 to be greeted by the price tag.. $1,020,000. Okay, so much for that. But the cockpit lights in the hard top changed color, the granite on the coutertops was 3/4" thick and real, and the Microwave rises up out of the counter at the touch of a switch. Wow!! But the cool thing was that it was equipped with the Zeus drives. When the salesman told my sailor friends about the skyhook feature that keeps the boat on station within 5 feet automatically, they almost tipped over.

Going to a boat show with sailors... now I confess that I came to boating through sailing so I am a sailor at heart too. But we did have to take turns going on power vs. sail. They were really blown away by the space, ameneties, and features of even the smaller power boats. They were also blown away by the cost per foot and the gallons per hour!

Jeaneau 45.. Ok, I know it's a sailboat, but like I said, I am also a sailor. This was real pretty. Big cockpit, massive aft stateroom, beautiful woodwork, tons of light from wrap around side and forward portlights, and electric winches if cranking ain't your thing. And at $350k even with the lousy value of the dollar, it seemed cheap.

And the deal of the show... Those of you that read my review of the Newport show in the fall will remember that I couldn't leave without buying something so I sprung for a new pair of sailing gloves. Well, this show was no different. I bought a boat hook for $13, a full $12 off the list price. Needed it since my wife managed to bend the old one after picking up a mooring last season.

The best part of the show is that after 3 hours, I am now totally fired up to start another killer boating season. I just got my my slip contract for '08 and it looks like the rate dropped by $10/ft. There is a god! Now, if only gas prices would follow suite......

Great read again ! I guess the Boston show runs until this Sunday ?

Yup, through this Sunday.

Keep in mind too, that the BCEC is so much bigger than the expo, that even when it's busy, it seems "not that bad." Attendance was up last year over the final year at Bayside, and rumor has it that it's up again this year over last. I'm sure however, that it is quieter on a weekday night. I'm on there on weekends.

I agree, this location is light years ahead of the Bayside Expo Center. I went to the show there about 6 years ago and it was packed to the gills. This is perfect. All in one large room and well laid out.

The place was really empty on Tuesday but the downside of going on a weekday night is that a lot of the smaller vendors for excesories and such were not at their booths.

I went to the show Weds. from 1:00 to 6:00 with one lunch break. It is a huge place with plenty to see for all types of boaters. I went with the perspective of looking to down size from a 31" twin gas inboard and had plenty of options to review. Even though I won't buy new, it gives me the ability to see what boats I'd like to buy on the used market in the future or in some cases the boat models have remained the same over the years and are currently available as "previously owned".

The ones that caught my eye were the downeast/ lobster /picnic style. A single diesel 26' to 29' would be about right. The Back Cove and Legacy topped the wish list even though they weren't present at the show (The Legacy 28 is discontinued) their siblings were. These were about the only ones that didn't have an engine box and had inboard power...no I/O desired.

All in all a great show and easy to navigate to and from the new Convention Center.

Everglades 35... Now that's beauty....... 380k for a CC.

If you haven't gone yet , I'd strongly suggest taking a quick peek at the 2 Windsor Craft boats , upscale motorboats made in Turkey. Not my kind of boat as one would never put a fish in the cockpit, but beautiful cold-molded mahogany hulls and amazing woodwork throughout from what I could see from the stand since no one is allowed onboard. I always have a fondness for the Eastern Casco Bay FB 31 at the show and a few of the medium-compact sportfishers like Carolina Classic 28 & Albemarle 29, Nausets , and several others not in the budget either. There was a quite striking and rather bizarre-looking IPS-powered Norwegian boat called the Fjord 40 Open, which seemed to be an avant-garde design exercise super-center-console cocktail craft for the contemporary chic. They really mean "open", as their is no silly transom above sole height to spoil the view at the aft end of the cockpit from the Scandanavian seating group. There's even a kayak with what I believe was a built-in water-jet engine. Furuno had partial-function beta versions of the spectactular new NN3D on display and Garmin's newest touch screen models were interesting to configure & play with. I think Furuno is going to make a bundle selling those 3D's.

With only 2 1/2 hrs for me to troll the whole show, I could easily have enjoyed another 4-5 hrs of educational wishful-thinking there, but I just made the last ferry back as it was. .

Prospective,

Did you notice what the "show special" was for the 36 Silverton? Last year it was $289,000 with a list of $348,765. The 2006 gas 40 Regal was at the show last year too.

If memory serves, it was still $289k for the 36C. The dealer was boatworld. The engine package was one up from the base engine. 6.2L I think? It was not the 8.1's. I pointed out to the sales guy that they had a new 36c w/ diesel yanmars listed on Yachtworld for awhile over the summer/fall. So I thought that 289k for the smaller gassers was odd. Only 10k diff? Not much comment from the sales guy.
