New to me boat

I am bringing the ship "Dead Reckoning " down from the Mystic river through the Moriches inlet to Patchogue on Saturday May 4th. the tide will be high in Moriches at around 3:30 pm. I could really use some local knowledge of the inlet and channel to the Great South Bay from someone who is in and out of there. The Chris draws 4 feet so my margin of error has been reduced from the Carver. Any help is appreciated.

I think I'm avail if you need some help. Although I haven't been through Moriches in 2 seasons, i do know the inlet and bay very well. Let me know if you want me and I'll move some things.

Billy: Give Seatow a call; they have the most up-to-date information. From speaking to the marina manager in Eastport, I know that there's been quite a bit of shoaling in the Moriches inlet area. There has been some dredging done, but I'm not certain eactly where. I had been through the west cut a few times last season with no problem, but there's been quite a bit of change since then.Good luck with your move and with your new boat. Hy
 
Would have loved to come Billy, Dave told me he spoke to Marie. I will be in Nashville that weekend. Do you have a GPS on the boat? Also, dont forget to get seatow insurance just in case. I forgot about that when I took my boat home last year from Staten Island.

Sorry I won't be around, would love to do the trip! I second the seatow advice. When we were stuck in fog in Moriches, they came out and guided us through. If a member it is a free service. I also would recommend borrowing someone's epirb if you can, unless you have one. You just never know and better safe than sorry.

Perry, its going to be a long day. I'm not sure I want to burden someone with it. I am looking more for advice as I'm coming in, like the chalk board chart Sea Tow did for Fire Island Inlet.

Please do not attempt without some competant crew. Too many things can go wrong and having someone who knows boats, waters, etc is a vital asset. Offer them lunch, dinner, drinks, whatever. Most boaters will do it just for the shear joy of being on the water for a day. Also remember the safety items please. A dinghy (I have a brand new one still in box if you want to borrow). A epirb. Life jackets. Flares. Wooden plugs. Tools. Etc.

I think back to my first trip home and that could of gone so wrong that day. My radio didn't work and didn't learn than until we got off shore and had the issue.

If for some reason this gets pushed past May 17th, I will definately do it with you. Unfortunately I will be in Singapore and Thailand for 2 weeks (well maybe not so uinfortunate)! LOL!

The last Local Notice to Mariners says:

NY-MORICHES BAY, SHINNECOCK BAY AND STATE BOAT CHANNEL (REVISED 12/13)
Shoaling has been reported in Moriches Bay along the Long Island Intercoastal Waterway in the vicinity of Moriches Bay Buoy 17,18, 21, 26, 27,
28 and 29 extending the entire width of the channel and at any tide level. The shoaling has resulted in reported depths less than one foot at high
tide. Shoaling is also reported in Moriches Inlet in the vicinity of Moriches Inlet East Cut Buoys 3E and 5E. Mariners should be aware that the Aids
to Navigation in these areas have been deemed unreliable due to shoaling and mariners are advised to seek alternate routes. If transiting these
areas, do so only at high tide and proceed slowly and with extreme caution.

Sounds like you might be better of at FI inlet this trip, especially with a new to you boat.
 
Well that stinks Billy, sounds like you want to go out the Shinacock inlet than come back in the FI inlet.

If you push it off the following weekend I will go with you.

I've done the run around Montauk Pt. twenty or thirty times. I grew up in Fishers and Block Is. sounds. I am going to run the ship at about 1700-1900 rpms, but it will be a slow ride. I will either come in Moriches if I can get reliable info or I will come in F.I. inlet. At the speed I will be running F.I. will add about three hours to the trip. The weather will of course be considered. The tide is high at 3:30 pm.
Where I am docking the boat I want to learn Moriches Inlet. No better time than the present.

I gotta agree with Walter and others...Moriches Inlet, unless you're following a local big boat, doesn't sound easy having to come in from the SW and not by a little. The east cut is impassable (you wouldn't go this way heading west) but the west cut is still ok. Take the west cut and hang a louie at the onion sack. follow the buoys to the west. I haven't been thru in 2 years and alot's happened since then but inside's still the same.

4's alot of draft to try a shallow inlet. That being said, I'm still available...

I would do the same thing and avoid running through the Peconics and the canal. You don't save anything and you do not want to dick around with the locks on a maiden voyage. Along that same line of thinking, I would not press Moriches on a maiden voyage either. Not enough boats will have gone through by the then to have a reliable track. If you are dead set to consider it, post up on noreast, tht and any other sites you can find to get input. IMO you will need more than anecdotal advice, you need a course track.

If it were me, I would go up the night before. Thoroughly check the boat and depart at first light. How many knots can she do at that rpm?
 
I kept my boat in Easport until last September, and I would have a hard time trusting anyone's advise on Moriches post Sandy except Sea Tow, especialing with a new boat drawing 4 feet and after a long trip from Mystic. And your insurance will not cover you in Moriches Inlet. There are boat ramps near the inlet you could use if you have access to a trailerable boat, like the end of South Bay avenue in Eastport (It is a Southampton town dock but I don't think they should be looking for permits yet) you could use for advance recon of this part of your route. Or see if you can pay Sea Tow Moriches to take you out for a tour with a handheld GPS to collect waypoints (they are very helpful and the man has to be a capitalist).

If you run into trouble and can't get through you are going to have a long and potentially dangerous night trying out your new anchor. It was bad here before Billy, after Sandy I would be extremely cautious.

I'm going up this weekend to go over all the systems again with the seller. He said he would go with me to fuel up. (a real nice guy) The plan is to go up Friday afternoon, stay on the boat over night, and leave the next morning. I just joined Sea Tow and will contact both as to Moriches inlet. I am also thinking about a new plan to go into Shinnecock Saturday afternoon, and take the rest of the trip on Sunday. This way if some local guys could make it they don't have to do the boring part.

So how is Shinnecock Inlet?

Based on the reports I would not attempt the inside this early in the season, not enough info yet. You could take a rest at Westhampton town marina and call DockMaster Frank as he is usally in the know about Moriches. I have all his numbers if you want to try him.
Westhampton would let you rest and leave at high tide.

I think the Fire Island inlet advice your getting is solid though, but your the Captain.

Remember on the inside you also have 3 bridges to deal with so you need to make sure they are operational when transiting.

Having Seatow guide you through is good. They can also watch the depths and make sure your okay before you get there.
