We are heading down Newport way this weekend. We plan on anchoring at third beach on Sunday but would like to pick up a mooring on Saturday.

Is it hard to get an overnight mooring in Newport?

Do they allow two boats to raft on the mooring overnight or will we need two moorings.
 
I can tell you that getting a mooring this weekend in Newport will be very difficult because it is the weekend of the Newport Jazz Festival. Last weekend was the Folk festival and it was pretty crowded then. I believe that some rafting is possible, but it depends upon who owns the mooring. This weekend will be crazy in Newport!

oh boy... we're heading back to newport on saturday and i will need a mooring... i think they only have 4 or 5 big moorings for our size :(

any good place to anchor otherwise? the harbor is real crowded, the outer edge of Brenton cove seems to be alway packed and that seemed to be the only anchorage
 
Hi Pascal.....if the harbor and Brenton Cove are packed (like I think they will be) you might check out the area directly north of the Goat Island Bridge. There are private moorings there as well as anchored boats. The down side is that it leaves you exposed to the NW. Can't the NYYC help you out for a night at one of their moorings? When are you going back to ACK? I am at Goat Island Marina and will look for you.

Has anyone ever anchored overnight at third beach? Any suggestions for the best anchorage spot?

Sorry I missed this post so you probably already went. But The only time I spent the night at 3rd beach I jumped on a private mooring late in the day and was never bothered. But there is plenty of anchoring space and holding ground is good so probably not too much of a problem. If I recall correctly, most anchored boats are to the right/north as you approach the cove. Let us know how you made out. Hope it was a good trip.

The trip was fantastic. We travelled with another boat and anchored out the first night. The winds were light and variable so we ended up tsting around my anchor but there was no worries, I just had to reset it a couple of times. My wife spoke with the harbormasters (Who were very friendly) and we found out there are town moorings in the middle of the mooring field for $20 per night. We moored the second night. We caught 5 different types of fish and really enjoyed the sandy beach and low amounts of traffic. We tried to hook up with Pascal but it didn't work out, maybe next time.

We plan on heading there again possibly over labor day. Any idea how much further to CuttyHunk?

too bad we couldn' get together this time around. We'll be back in Newport in a couple of weeks, likely friday 8/21 and saturday.

the harbor was crazy on saturday with the Jazz festival. All moorings were full (there are only 6 large moorings anyway) so we had to anchor out. I was able to squeeze in on the edge of brenton cove, close to the cable area markers. good holding though, i set the hook at 5:1 and then shortened scope to about 3.5:1.

when we came up the bay, there must have been 300 boats sailing and motoring in and out of the harbor... and a couple of hundred anchored around the fort. typical party crowd...

it's about 20/25NM to cuttyhunk from newport

Glad to hear it was a good time and interesting to note there are town moorings available. I'll keep that in mind. As for cutty. It is a great destination and in my boat is another 35min+/- ride to Cutty. In general I find the ride much smoother than going to Block. You're only exposed to the ocean swell for that 30min after leaving the Sakonnet and the wind/wave direction is on the quarter rather than the nose. If you haven't been you should go. Not as much to do as Block. Nothing but beach in fact. But I think it cozier and more charming. And the beaches are great. We are heading back for Labor Day weekend if weather allows.
 
We are planning on 3rd beach again for Labor Day, Assuming I get the steering fixed by then (Shoudl be no problem)
 
Who do you contact for Newport moorings? Is it the Harbormaster or Oldport Marine? What are the rates?
 
If you are referring to Newport Harbor (rather than 3rd beach cove), then it's Oldport Marine. Hale on ch68. Rates are $45 to 49ft and 50+ft is $60.

Thanks. If you rent a mooring from Oldport, does it inlcude the launch service or do you still have to pay $3/person for each ride?
