This is our plan for this year, but we were thinking of maybe another marina in NJ, since we have been to Haverstraw. Anyone have any other suggestions?

June 27 Saturday – Channel Club - NJ
June 28 Sunday – Channel Club NJ
June 29 Monday – Channel Club NJ
June 30 Tuesday - Haverstraw
July 1 Wednesday - Haverstraw
July 2 Thursday - Haverstraw
July 3 Friday – Liberty Landing- NY
July 4 Saturday – Liberty Landing- NY
July 5 Sunday – Head for Home

I like Beach Haven Yacht Club. Pretty good ride from the channel club but I've done it in one shot. Small, friendly marina, no pool, but free bikes, free ocean badges, several good restaurants in walking distance as well as walking distance to the amusements and shops.

I have no personal experience, but the Seaside Park Yacht Club's website mentions that they have transient slips.

It may be something to look into. From the north, it's somewhat closer than BHYC. From the north you could enter either Barnegat Inlet and then head north on the ICW, or Manasquan inlet and then head south on the ICW. It will definetly be a tricky heading into the marina crossing the Barnegat Bay, so local info would be a must. You could also spend a day on the hook at a very popular local anchorage called Tices Shoal.

We used to spend 2 weeks a year in Seaside Park and trailer a 23' cuddy down. Agreed, the water is skinny as hell!

Just looking at the charts and what I have read, isn't Barnegate Inlet a little dicey without local knowledge? I seem to remember a few recent groundings.

Also, the ICW though Barnegate Bay and down to the BHYC also seems a little tricky with alot of skinny water around. Not sure how it compares tot he Great South Bay where Dave usually boats..

Having spent my childhood in Beach Haven, I would consider this for a stop on my way south except that it seems to have some concerns.

The bay is no real problem if you just follow the markers.

There is some movement of the sand in the channel going to and from the inlet, but the CG keeps up with the changes pretty well and repositions the bouys. Worst case scenario is that you follow a large boat in or out. There are plenty going in and out all the time. Otherwise the depth of the inlet is no problem.

Swells do kick up with an outgoing tide with an easterly wind at the mouth of the inlet.

Pt. Pleasant area - Bogans or Brielle Yacht Club, Farther back down the Manasquan is Crystal Point Yacht Club - nice place.

I agree with the skinny water water in the Barnegat Bay on the way to SPYC. The picutre on their website shows that there are some larger boats in the marina. Local info, IMHO, is an absolute must.

With regard to the ICW in the Barnegat Bay area, yes, just outside the markers in some areas the water is very low. If you stay in the channel, you won't have a problem. As a general rule of thumb while traveling the ICW in NJ; the closer the ICW markers are to each other the skinnier the water is outside the channel.

Barnegat Inlet is much better than it was prior to the early 90's when both the north and south jetties were rebuilt. As with most inlets, it still has it's 'moments'. If you can, plan to traverse at a slack High Tide and you'll find it somewhat easier on the nerves. Another technique is to grab a local on the radio and follow him in.

Seaside Park Yacht Club is on the East side of the bay. You can see it in the pic below. I drew in a VERY crude approximation of the ICW in that area....the White Line. The Red line is another VERY crude approximation of the route you would follow to get to into the SPYC marina. The White and Red lines join at ICW #36.

Dave you will see what they mean by skinny water when you take your boat from Sheltered Cove in Tuckerton Creek out to the Little Egg Inlet. I will be putting my boat in early April possibly late March. I can take you out to the ocean if you would like. Many of the markers are not up until May. Just e-mail me if you want to follow me out through the skinny water.

Bill,
Thanks. I will follow u for sure. I think I am getting a free Captain from the marina to show me a few things as well.
