I got a letter from a company that must do the renewal for you? What it the point? Why not go directly to USCG website to renew?

There have been many threads here and other boating forums regarding this legal scam. They send out letters that mimic the real CG and send you to their website that also mimics the real CG, enough to make people think they are dealing with the real CG and end up paying $75 for something the real CG doc office will do for $26.

It would seem the USCG could shut it down if the blocked access to the database with expiration information. Maybe the USCG sells that information like DMV does for vehicle & driver information to Carfax and insurance companies.

They already have. They stopped listing owners names and addresses at least a year ago. The scammers only have old databases to go on which eventually will dry up.

Just got my renewal reminder letter from one of the scammers. The letter clearly states that renewal is mandatory 5 years. This is wrong. The real CG Doc office offers 1-5 year renewal for $26/year.

got mine too! Can't wait to pay a premium for my renewal.

Never hurts to remind people to only go to the real Coast Guard Doc office website to renew. You can renew for 1-5 years at $26/year. Scammers want $75/year and at least one of them will only allow you to renew for 5 years…at $75/year.
