Norcold DE704 D doesn't work on 12V, fine on 110

Billy III please explain how a 23VDC transformer works.
 
The transformer takes 110VAC and converts it to 23VAC what the compressor runs on. The DC component is a switching power supply (similar to an inverter) it also feeds the transformer but at a lower voltage. So the DC supply is the most complex part of a Norcold. Because it has to take 12VDC and convert it to an AC voltage. Unfortunately I don't know the voltage that comes out of the DC switching (inverter) supply.
A transformer by design will only convert AC voltages. So think of the transformer in the NorCold as a step down converter for AC voltages.
I hope this helps a bit? Perhaps I can power up the NorCold given to me last week and get the DC switching power supply's AC voltage into it's windings on the transformer.

Also just to try and not make this too complex this transformer has 2 primary windings one for the 110VAC and a 2nd primary for the DC switch power supply (that converts to an unknown AC voltage), the secondary feeds the compressor. I doubt you have a bad transformer if you did you would smell it and it would look melted. I think your problem is either in the DC switching supply or the 12VDC feeding the unit.

Thanks a lot Bill. I am inclined to say there is 12V getting to the unit. When the 12V breaker is switched on there is a distinct clicking noise coming from the unit. Perhaps the DC switching supply...who knows until I get a chance to look at it. Never dreamed these things were so complex!

Pulsating DC is square wave AC it's done by switching the DC on and off very fast.

That sounds inefficient. Is there a better way that consumes less power?
 
My DE0061T about 7cu ft uses 3 amps when the compressor is on. It runs about 40% of the time.
I'll admit it's a strange way of getting 23 VAC to the compressor from a 12VDC source.

I believe that the Norcold transforms AC down to the operating voltage and inverts DC up to the same voltage. I have always believed the operating voltage was about 40 VAC.

Because of the wave shape, there is likely to be some error in measuring the voltage produced from DC. If you measure it, take it with a grain of salt. BillyIII, of course, needs not be thus cautioned.

A pragmatic solution in SeaingDouble's instance might be to feed the 120 vac side with a 200 watt inverter. Probably less than US$40.
 
I just went tru this on my fridge ... There is a transfer switch ... Two things are happening . either ur house battery is low .( low voltage prevents the transfer ) of the transfer switch which is more then a switch is bad. Ill try and find the part # . Cal nic rb2@gr5t nautical air 1-516-586-5244

He has everything in stock. Just tell him the issue . works on 110. Makes a lot clicking on 12 volts.

1 Rob it's one or the other, I'm betting the transfer relay in the DC switching supply is bad.

Rob what type of batteries were you using?
I meant to say +1 to what you said on the cause of the other RO's problem, it could be bad 12VDC that should be ruled out 1'st before digging into the DC switching supply / transfer circuit.
