We're considering moving to a marina on the north shore, in the Port Jeff area, for next season. Great South Bay has been terrible this season with constant rough weather. It's been impossible to even drift along, with me fishing and the Admiral reading a book. Any suggestions on a marina? It must have clean bathrroms and floating docks. The Admiral won't climb up and down ladders and I can't do so easily any more. We have a 24' Chaparral with an 8 1/2' beam.

Hi,

If you don't know already, your going to find out, slips on the north shore are hard to come by. In Pj there are only two options, the town marina and Danfords. Looks like your a brook haven resident so the town marina is an option, I don't knwo what the wait list is like. Danfords is mainly transient, but you could call to find out if they take seasonal, expect to pay 125 per foot or so. You could also do rack storage in PJ.

You may want to consider Mount Sinai, also has a town marina and some private facilities/yacht clubs.

"Great South Bay has been terrible this season with constant rough weather."

Every afternoon on the GSB you can expect the SW breeze to pick up creating a stiff chop. I feel this summer had lots of good weather. Maybe you just need a bigger boat. Only kidding!

If you dock on the north shore, in a small harbor, remeber that to get to another harbor you have to go out into the LI Sound, which can be rougher than the GSB.

Another option would be to find a marina east of the Smith Point bridge. The "Narrows Bay" from the bridge all the way to Westhampton is usually pretty calm. Even when the wind is ripping you'll be able to go out without getting beat up too badly. Good fishing in the area too.

Thanks, all. We used to dock our previous boats in Moriches, and I've been fishing there and further east since I was 4 or 5, a long time ago! I can't remember a season of such contiuous wind and rough water on the bay as we had this summer. Whenever I would check the weather forecast it would be winds and chop on the south shore while the north shore was calmer. We only got out about a half dozen times this season, partially because of family illness and partially because of the weather. We're just looking for some calmer seas and interesting places to visit. I've been on the Sound when it's rough. Two years ago my son-in-law took me to a Mets game on Father's Day on his boat out of Memaronack Yaucht Club. The ride there was 30 minutes and fun. During the game the wind kicked up. The ride back was almost 2 hours heading into 6-8' waves. Our 2 grandsons were terrified; I wasn't too thrilled either. So I know the Sound can be rough. We're just investigating at this point. Thanks for the advice. Hy

I suggest Modern Yacht in Hampton Bays. This gives you tons of options depending on the weather and the fishing's great.
