I will be cruising from Jersey City to Norwalk Cove Marina next week to participate as a Chase Boat for the Baloon Race. It looks like the Entrance Channel is clearly marked. Any local knowledge or anything I need to be concerned about?

We will be there as well

The Channel is well marked and as long as you stay in it you will be ok

Also look out for the bamboo poles with red flag all around the harbor

If you want to anchor and hang out for a while zieglers cove is a beautiful place to drop an anchor

That's my home marina. I'm on "Honey" at A-13E. Come say hello.

As for local knowledge, watch out for floating pot markers and sticks as you approach the channel...they're everywhere. The entrance channel gets very tight between a green mark (rock pile) and a spit of beach to starboard. You actually have good depth fairly close to the beach, but my gut keeps telling me I'm about to go aground. You'll have the same experience if you pass a decent size boat coming out at that point. Further in, shoal water runs along the west side of the channel, and the green bouys are often over shoal water at low tide. Don't get way over to the green side at low tide--the channel goes away in a heartbeat. Tides run about 6 feet, so if you enter on a high tide, you'll be able to relax a little.

The Norwalk Islands are one of the Sound's best boating destinations. Tons of little coves to explore. Put the big boat behind an island, and explore with the dink. Use plenty of scope on your anchor--remember the 6' tide and the associated current.

I actually pointed it out to you when we went to the Norwalk show. At your age you cant remember that far back!
If you look a the cicle on the map and move your eyes left about 10 oclock you will see it.
If you see Scotts cove it just left.
Scotts cove is shallow. There is plenty of water in Zieglers cove. You can probably just grab a mooring.

actually I do remember you pointing it out..........just never been in there....it did look like a nice quiet spot.

It was your one time on the north shore.

Just got back from a day on the Indian River.
Today was funny we had a manatee hang by the boat most of the day. He was funny kept nudging me to scratch his head then he would do a roll so I could scratch his belly.
Hope you are having a good season, wednesday we are taking the boat out to watch the shuttle launch.
 
I understand..........( you miss New York and the North Shore )...... hang in there it will get better !!!.........:) :) :)
 
I actually do miss places like essex , block and greenport. I guess I will have to suffer with boating 12 months a year.
