I started my engines yesterday and the walter drive was engaged (unknowingly) what a noise. Did I ruin anything? It sure was making some bad noise.

I am surprised it would start in gear. Have you run the engines since? Are they shifting normally?

I was likewise surprised. I assume it may have fired since I used a remote starter. I do know once I placed the gearshift into neutral the motor startred and ran fine.

If drives were fully engaged there should be no damage. Two things that are concerning. Firstly, just like a car, boats have "neutral safety switches" which prevent starteing when in gear. Whether from a remote or key, this should never happen. That needs to be fixed. Secondly, if the drives were fully engaged, I'm baffled to why there was such a loud noise.

SOME boats have neutral safety switches. The older ones (and the older cars) may not. Mine didn't; I had to install one.

But assuming the switch is present, it might be a matter of the switch or the linkage being out of adjustment.

Not familiar with the drive, but just about everyone who has driven a "stick" has ground a gear or two, USUALLY with no damage.

He said remote starter, that may be wired in differently from the normal key switch and bypass the safety switches.?

That would be even worse - remote starter starts in gear - not good

BTW - why would a boat have a remote start?

It came with the alarm :)

Mine doesn't. It's a year 2000 but it's also a diesel. I've thought about installing a switch, but it's pretty low on my list of projects. So far I've never started it in gear except for the time I tried it to see if it had a switch. ;)

I don't think a remote start on a boat is such a good idea, you need to activate the exhaust fan/fans first before starting and you should always be at the controlls when starting a boat.
