The manual calls for "volvo brand" synthetic 30W oil. However, after seeing the price of Volvos special blend (which im sure cant possibly be any better than Amsoil, yet Amsoil is cheaper per quart!), I changed the oil today and refilled with Shell Rotella 30w dino oil. Its SJ rated (what the manual calls for).

I did this because Im not sure what the last owner used. I have records of service, but nothing about what type of oil was used. Im assuming the shop probably just filled up with regular ol' dino oil because the oil changes werent really expensive. The oil was really dirty and the oil filter apparently wasnt changed last time because it was on so tight and stuck to the engine that it collapsed under the pressure of the oil filter wrench to get it off [:0]

My question and concern is this. I wanted to run a really good dino oil (because using synthetic would be a waste for my purpose)and in essence "flush out the engine", change the oil after 10 hours, and then refill with Amsoil's 10w-30 marine synthetic engine oil. Their 10w-30 marine synthetic oil is supposed to be "multi-purpose", covering 10w-30w and regular ol 30w. What is everybody else using?? Are people that change their oils themselves actually paying $8/qt for Volvos oil??
