Old gas

New to me Carver 350 aft cabin. Noticed that both motors are running off of starboard gas tank. Both run fine like that. I had a good idea what was going to happen next. Put the port tank on line and the port motor died after 5 minutes. Pulled the fuel seperater filter and looks like old gas with some bugs in it. It is dark brown.

Before I put the tank on line I put 10 gallons of fresh gas in it and a bunch of blue stuff. The previous owner did not use the boat much the last 2 years and claimed that the boat has never had ethanol in it.

I am guessing that there is about 20 to 25 gallons in the tank. I want to drain the tank, flush it with a few gallons of fresh gas, drain it again, and then add fresh gas.

What is the best way to pump it out?

If you can establish a point lower than the tank, then siphon it out. If not, can you establish a siphon if you disconnect the fuel line?

If the boat remains in the water siphoning may not be the easiest task to pull off, so perhaps something like this might help as long as it's set up so no sparking (even in the switch ,) is near the fumes.

Unfortunately, that little include filter will likely clog quickly and without it the pump may be compromised(?).

A bit more tedious but much safer, cheaper & maybe faster is this hand transfer pump apparently rated for gasoline use:

You could securely attach to a fuel line before the filter or open the tank gauge sender opening and run the suction hose in there. Run the blower for a long time after all the bad fuel has been removed from the boat, tank is flushed with gas and closed up, and keep everything else Off until then. Ideally, that would include everyone else off the boat too , just like when filling the tank but you may feel safer with a backup set of hands.

You might need to flush the lines to the carb , check any filter at the carb inlet fitting if it is a Quadra-jet, (and possibly clean the carb or try draining the bowl).

Spent the day draining my tank today. Same thing. Sludge and water. Fuel was from 7 months ago. I'd be surprised if you have non ethonal fuel as it's hard to find. Good luck. And post an update once you flush it and let us know how it works out.

After your tank is cleaned......getting NON ethanol gas may be easier than you think. Your Patchogue neighbor may be able to help.....
