Old photo of clammers on frozen GSB

I remember the bay freezing in the mid 50s, as well as the ice boats in Bellport. Great pix, brings back memories, although I never did any "ice clamming" myself, I have done it in summer.

Great pics...love the vw shot with the tongs. I had one almost identical...

Thanks Dave! I just went through hundreds of old slides and threw away a lot. Took 150 of them to Costco and they'll put them on DVD. I know I still have some more to do so maybe the scanner isn't a bad idea for that price. Have to give it some thought.

The costco deal is great on slides.

I have a pic of my folk's pals out on the bay in the Nassau Shores cove in the late 50's. we used to walk out there and sometimes skate in the 60-70s and used to walk on the frozen canals almost every year. Quite few pickup hockey gameson the lakes at Marjorie Post Pk also.

Got the dvd back from Costco so here's better quality:

I love the picture of Clamming on the GSB! I posted it on i shared it on my website and i got a response from a women who said the guy with the picture with the bug is her husband and she wants to get him a copy of that picture for a gift. Is this the best quality you have for this or can you email me something? her name is Par Cherveny - maybe you know her? My site is FireIsland.com.

Did you see them dirving back?

Andy, I think those guys made it back but there were occasional stories over the years about people driving out on the ice and sinking through. Actually one of the kids in my school died in junior high or early in high school trying to ride his bike across the bay.

From what I remember it was really only that one winter (76/77) that the ice was thick enough that the clammers drove out. There were probably other earlier years but normally the bay by us didn't freeze that thick.

Those photos brought back a lot of memories. I grew in Patchogue, spent summers on the GSB, mainly at Davis Park...back in the 50s. What a great childhood!!!!

I remember those winters we walked from the West Venice to Gilgo but you could feel the ice moving the whole time. Zane in the picture with the VW is the guys last name Smith? We grew up together and during the summer I would work off his boat to make extra money. Thanks for all the pics they bring back great memories of the bay as it was back then.

Yup, many great memories. Glad I lived there when I did.
