Who can tell me about anchoring at this park west of Haulover inlet? This looks like a good spot to spend the night at anchor coming from PE.

From Google Earth, I see a beach to sboard as you enter, and I believe FIU facilities to port. I'm guessing the beach is a no anchorage zone.

Any comments on this area?

Thanks,

Esteban

It has been heaven and hell for me. I have anchored there probably 10 times over the past three years. 8 of the times have been wonderful and peaceful. Twice I have hooked thick metal cables laying on the bottom. Had to dump 250' of chain and burned out my windlass the first time. The second time I only ended up with a sliced up hand and a close call with the rocks on the west side near FIU (approx 25.90682, -80.13711). The first time was at approx 25.91046, -80.13420

I have anchored there about once a month for the past 4 years. It's quite roomy so if you find boats with loud people or music you can anchor away from them. Usually, you see 5 to 10 boats on a weekend night. Compared to another popular spot like Lake Sylvia, that's great. Never had any problem at all. The only thing I don't like is the FIU spot lights. They are very bright and aimed directly at you. I like privacy and darkness at night. So I usually anchor on the right side, away from the lights. Besides, the spot is so close to the inlet, close to the sand bar and Beer Can Island, and less than an hour from Bayside. In the morning you can get coffee and gas at the little store by the inlet entrance.

Esteban, you cannot beach the boat. There is a line with bouys and you cannot cross it. If you want that, go to Beer Can. But there, you will have to share your night with mosquitos (not always).

By the way, if you are coming down on the Intercoastal you can also go to Lake Maude. There's even less traffic there. Whatch out for falling cargo planes there!
