Purchased a 1989 Chaparral Laser which came with a 3.0 Onan genset.
While surveying, they cranked up the gennie and it was somewhat loud - and then quieted down after about 30 seconds. The surveyor said it still wasnt as quiet as it should be, and recommended an impeller change - which I demanded of the dealer before agreeing to purchase the boat.
Now that I have the boat, I have cranked the genset twice - let it get to the point of "going quiet" and its still just as loud as it was before...
After everyone at the beach stopped laughing at me for having a genset louder than woodstock, we went back and checked the sea strainer for debris - or which we found none - and also verified our sea cock valve was in the correct position - of which I'm pretty sure we have done.
Can anyone give me an idea of what might be causing this problem? One of the reasons we bought was to be able to stay cool on the hook (Texas) and the thought of not being able to use the genset for fear of hurting it is not a good one.
