Methinks you are on the right track. That's a helluva way to reef the main.

Glad there ere no ( physical ) injuries, but that has got to shake up your psyche a bit.

Charter boat with a licensed captain at the helm...

Always a worry when sailing as at 5 kts there isn’t much we can do if some idiot isn’t paying attention and bearing down on us at speed

A witness is in a sea ray forum. Nobody really knows what happened. They think the sail boat unexpectedly tacked into their path and the captain couldn't react fast enough. Pretty wild.

If that is the case, shame on the sailboat captain, but I still blame the powerboat captain. If he couldn't react fast enough, he was too close to begin with.

In open water there is no reason to pass that close to another vessel.

Spot on!

But we see it all the time. Well,... not quite THAT close.

Now they have a motorsailer together. Hope no one was seriously hurt & I expect that would have been mentioned.

SIXTEEN boating deaths on Chesapeake alone already this year! This with "licensed operator" We must expect better.

Close passing in open water happens frequently especially as people use chart plotters and auto pilots. Stupid but thats just the fact. Not much fog around here but I expect it can be really exciting these days.
