Opening Day on the Bay!

I've had my boat in the delta and never went to opening day. Now, I'm at Pier 39. Is it worth seeing and/or going out in the bay?

"Worth it" is a personal thing...

We've enjoyed opening day on the bay about a dozen times now. Most of them while on a boat (either ours or a friends). The views from the shoreline can be great, but mostly if you are in the front row, otherwise, as with any parade/event, you will miss most of it.

The waters will be crazy! And not just from the swell/weather/wave action. Other boaters!

Sometimes it seems like every weekend boater is out there bobbing around in a clueless state of mind (inebriated is probably more like it).

One of our neighbors took his 19' open bow out there with his family (against my advice) and was swamped by a passing large cruiser. Multiple boats, actually... Thanks to some other boaters in the area, none of them drowned!

If you are comfortable with a crowded bay and won't mind having to keep an eye on your fellow boater more than the festivities and have a capable boat (I'm assuming you do since it is at Pier 39), then go for it!

Take a camera and have someone take plenty of pictures!

And good luck with the weather!

Thanks for info. I'm comfortable in crowded bay having been out during Blue Angels several times.
regarding your neighbor, sounds like he was very lucky. Reminds me that at one of the Blue Angel shows, there was a guy out there with his GF/Wife in a row boat. Kid you not. I could not believe it. If you've been out in that, you now that as soon as the show is over, all the boats just start up and leave in every direction. This guy was being bounced around in every which way. I can't imagine what his GF/Wife was saying to him.
I had my camera, but for some reason did not take a picture. Sure wish I had.

The weather will be more unpredictable and the waters rougher May 1 than in October. Have fun and be careful!

Understood. Have been in some rough stuff in the bay before.
That said, my slip is at the end of the dock next to the breakwater, so we might have a good view just "slip sailing" (if I can use that term with a power boat)

Which dock are you on at PIER 39. Sounds like you are probably a few boats down from me.

Any day on the water is great. There are some nicely decorated boats on opening day so it is fun if you enjoying watching boats on the bay. I am ready for some sun!

I'm at F32. I am totally tired of this rain!

I might take a cruise to view the events if the weather is nice. It will be a last minute thing; took the day off.

Last year we planned a weekend trip to Sausalito in late May. It was windy and raining the week before and like glass for our weekend trip, then back to windy. You can never tell with the Bay. The Bay and the Admiral, minds of their own.

Making plans to be out there if the weather is good.
Anyone else?

Wow - the weather was fantastic. Thought there would be more boats out there.

Poor economy coupled with high gas prices makes for fewer boats on the water.......

yes, there were many more sailboats than power, much more than normal
during the boat parade, a big ship came into the bay. Blew its horn like crazy getting boats out of the way. A few boats lost power and were asking assistance. Fortunately, not in the path of that big ship!

Not sure who won for best boat in parade. I was looking online, but have not found yet.

Also, there was a white military vessel, probably 120ft long, gun turret on front, but had no markings or flag. Men on deck in uniform. Anyone know where it was from?

We went out because the weather was just fantastic and, after the blessing of the fleet we anchored on the back on Angel Island for lunch. Ayala cove was totally full.

Nice pics - I'll try and post some tonight
We did not make it over to Angel Island. We just stayed near the Parade Route and cruised towards the GG and back
