I've seen these boats around, followed them on Facebook, etc... Seems they do really good work cleaning debris from our waterways... I was talking with a friend about "joining" and possibly volunteering for some cleanups and whatnot when he mentioned he read some articles regarding some potential shenanigans with their financing (especially after hurricane Sandy). Is anyone here familiar with this group? is there any validity to these claims?

I don't know about shenanigans, but our waterways are pretty darn clean, especially after Sandy I thought it would be a mess, but it wasn't, if these people are responsible for the cleanup, I say thank you!!

We have a Splash boat in our marina. I see it go out often, including volunteers from our marina and come back with a boat full of garbage. They appear to be doing good for our bay. .

There were some news stories last year about some of the principals in the non-profit starting a separate for-profit company that got some gov't contracts for post Sandy cleanup.

I believe they said they did this because there were items out there after the storm that volunteers wouldn't be able to cart off.

There were those who were concerned that OS's lobbying on environmental issues might be compromised by some of the same people being involved in government funded work. I don't believe there were any suggestions of wrongdoing; it was more about a potential conflict of interest.

I don't think any of this should concern someone who wants to go out with them to pick up trash from the bay - there's no possible downside to that.
