Outboard Yamaha question

My son is looking at a small fishing boat with a 2001 Yamaha 250 with about 1,100 hours on it. Would an engine with so many hours be at the end of its life? Please advise.
 
Is it a 2 stroke or a 4 stroke? It all depends on how it was maintained.

I'd have it gone over and compression checked by a pro before I bought it if it were me.

As Bob said, have it compression tested. If it was maintained well a Yamaha will go a few thousand hours easily.
 
Most 2-smoke outboards that are well maintained and fed lots of GOOD oil will last almost forever. Maintenance is the key. And the older, non HPDI, or ETEC or OPTI are reliable as anvils. Suck more gas than a NASCAR Cup car but run forever. Check compression, or better yet do a leak-down test and if it's got a computer get a readout. And if you get it, first thing is a new water pump impellor and a decarb.
 
Yamaha did not make a 250 4 stroke back in 2001.
Those 250 2 stokes do very well if they are maintained as others have pointed out.
Dig deep to find out the maintenance history so you know what you are dealing with.

ETECs are fuel injected so there is no overlap between intake and exhaust that leads to low fuel efficiency. They are as good as the four strokes on fuel.
 
Yamaha had a huge exhaust problem during that period.

Plan on aprox 2,000 repair right out of the gate . ( u can google it )

What year is the 225 4 stroke Yamaha?
 
That year and model is right in the range for the exhaust problems.

The engine needs to be scoped to check for the corrosion. Even if it does not have any it would be advisable to have the kit installed. Prices vary.

I just read the article by BoatUS on this problem. Potential big problem to face and big $$$ to fix it. I don't know if my son wants to deal with this issue.
 
The Yamaha 225 4 stroke was not produced until 2002. The problem with the exhaust plate on these engines was pretty well known and many of them were corrected by dealers early on - any Yamaha outfit can check on that if you just give them the serial number of the engine which will also designate the exact year.
These updated 225/4 parts and kits have done very well so if you can confirm that this motor was converted at some point it would be a big plus.
