Our family vacation starts 7/15 in Nag's Head. We rented a house right on the water, ocean side. I would have room for the boat/trailer and would most likely launch from Manteo...at least I think so.

I have the local charts, Handheld GPS (need to buy the unlock if I bring the boat), but I wanted some experienced feedback as to whether it is worth trailering down from MD. I regularly enjoy the Upper Chesapeake, with much still to discover. I'm comfortable with charts and GPS.

Obviously, I would be sticking to the sound (Albemarle and Roanoke), but I was hoping for some quick feedback from anyone in the know before I waste the time to do my homework and plan my day trips. I just want to know if the waterways are generally free of hazards, and are the channels as well marked, and the charts as accurate(usually)as the Bay? Clearly, I am looking for the boat to augment a relaxing vacation this time, as our "boating" vacations are typically on FW lakes where deep water is never a concern.

Any recommendations for daily outings from that general area that the admiral and kids (4 & 7) would enjoy with transient docking for a 20 footer? Thanks!!
