Overheated starboard motor.

I have Volvo 5.7 GI/DF motors in my boat. Yesterday while underway cruising at 4000 rpm the High temp alarm went off and the motor went into limp mode. The gage was at 200 degrees. I shut it down and limped home on one motor. Pulled the impeller which looked fine and replaced it with a new one. Temp seems to be OK at the dock. I will test ride later this week. My question is, what damage could I have done to the motor due to the high temp and what else should I be checking. It took a while to get the motor started after replacing the impeller. Thanks for the help.
 
You should be keeping 1 eye on the gauge at all times under hi power settings.Check any rubber exaust components, shift cable ,hoses, etc. where they pass close to the exaust pipe.

The issue here is you have not discovered the problem and that it has not likely been fixed. Perhaps water flow was greatly reduced by picking up a plastic bag or maybe a suction hose is collapsing under higher flow or maybe you are sucking air at a loose or cracked hose but something is begging for attention here.
Sounds like you have skirted any big problems with the initial overheat but finding the problem which caused it will be the harder mission now.

You got infrared heat gun? Ck manifolds and risers first.

4K RPM is a bit high for a cruise.

200* ain't a killer but the cause might be. Ck rubber connectors (and any other heat susceptible exhaust component) like alien suggested
 
Thanks Guys, I will check the complete system this weekend. The old impeller was in there a couple of seasons and a couple of the vanes felt softer then others so I am hoping that was my problem. I think if I had restricted water flow the impeller would have torn apart. As For the RPMs, yes 4000 is high. I usually run at 3200-3500 but it was sooo nice out, I bumped it up a bit.
 
UPDATE: Test ride Friday went well. Temp stayed at 170. Ran the boat for several minutes at high rpm with no increase in temp.
Motor seems to have no issues. I got very lucky on this one. Thanks for the advise.
 
check the oil cooler first. most problems are due to a blockage (debris, eel grass, pieces of old zinc) in the oil cooler. I would start there first before going to the risers and elbows.
