Hello,I am planning a trip from Boston to baltimore the weekend of Aug 10. To attend a couple Balt. vs Boston games. I figure to allow 3 full days cruising each way ( to be on the safe side) according to my charts & plotting,I'm planning on staying overnight in southern New jersey, preferably on the Delaware Bay side. Could anyone recommend a marina in this area. All i require is a slip & a restraunt. Also i prefer to fuel up the night before so as to get off to an early start. Also is thier anything I should know about cruising Delaware Bay & the C& D canal. Local knowlede='s Priceless. Thanks in advance

How about stopping in Cape May? Too far to go on day two?

i was thinking in or around cape may,i'd prefer a marina on the west side of NJ.

Once you pass Cape May there is really no place to stop or stay until your in the C&D canal. The canal is about 50nm up the river. I'd recommend either the Canyon Club or South Jersey Marina in Cape May. From there you take the Cape May canal out to Delaware Bay. Cape May to Balitmore is about 110nm. If your doing Boston to Balt in 3 days, the this leg should be easy.

Watch the tide in the CM Canal. I found out the hard way that it's shallow behind the ferries. Keep a good lookout in DB. A lot of stuff comes downriver and you usually only see a little of it, just like an iceburg. 90% is under the water. Try to catch the tide. The C&D is easy with the occassional ship.

Might want to try Little Egg or Stone Harbor if Cape May is too booked, though the ICW is kind of tight down there.

Utsch's Marina is my choice in Cape May. Atlantic City might be good if Cape May is too much of a hike. Where are you staying your first night out?

1st nights stay depends on a couple things.early start time ,currents & weather of course. Tide is with me as i'll be leaving an hr or so before high tide. I'd like to shoot for NYC of better yet the northern Jersey side

NY Harbor has a few places to dock. Liberty Landing Marina is where I keep my boat. Restaurant and fuel on site. Calmest water on the Hudson. Great view of downtown NY and The Statue Of Liberty.

Utch's is a great choice for Cape May, The Lobster House is right there.

Maybe I'm a little conservative, but three days from Quincy to Baltimore sounds like an agressive crusing schedule. Are you going through L.I. Sound or outside to get to NJ? Just curious. I see you have a 48' Sea Ray...what do you expect your cruising speed to be?

I made it from Ft. Lauderdale in 6 1/2 days with 3 days inside the ICW in Florida. Made it from Savanah, Ga to NY Harbor in 3 1/2 days, that going inside on the Sounds in NC up to Norfolk then jumping out.

I made it from Ocean City, MD to NY Harbor in 6 1/2 hours.

Run hard on the first day and get to New York Harbor or Atlantic Highlands NJ if you can. You just start at 5-6 am and run all day. 25 knots all day long you make good distance. Long day but doable.

From there you can easily make it to Baltimore in 2 normal days without running long days.

This is all good if the weather cooperates and the boat runs good for you.

BTW, Liberty Landing has an automated fuel dock that you use with a credit card all hours of the night. So if you come in late the first night, you can top off the tanks.

I cruised up from Merritt island Fl to Boston. Took my time, two 2 night stayovers.& it took 10 days. By maxin out the daylight hrs (leaving at 1st light ) I was outside at the 1st sight of the sun & ready to run. I would cruise at about 20 knts for 10 to 12 hrs

Anyone here do any fishing in Lake Champlain?

I used to as a kid Mike.

Seems you like to fish yourself. (I'm not biting!)

There are several facilities on the Maurice River, which is maybe 15 or 20 miles North of the Cape May Ferry terminal, on the DE bay side. If you look at the chart, the Maurice is not very far out of the way, assuming you are running the straight line course from Cape May up to Ship John, which is the way I always go. If you are all the way out in the main channel, it is a little further out of the way. You do have to run a couple miles up the river to get to the marinas, but in my opinion it's a quicker in-out than the Cape May facilities. Cheaper too, but amenities are limited.

I sold my boat to a guy that keeps it at Boat World Marina in Leesburg: http://boatworld-marina.com/

I've never been to these places, but here's their numbers, from http://www.mauricerivertwp.org/environment1.html

Spring Garden Marina in Port Elizabeth: 856-825-5334
Penny Hill Boat Yard & Marina in Dorchester: 856-785-0100
Four Star Marina in Leesburg: 856-785-1273
Berry's Driftwood marina in Heislerville: 856-785-2293
Andy's Marina in Heislerville: 856-785-0101
Anchor Marina in Heislerville: 856-785-9899
Haase's Marina in Heislerville: 856-785-7001

What does fishing on Lake Champlain have to do with Clearsea's post?

I don't know how long it would take you to get to and go threw the Cape Cod Canel, but Its about 190+-miles from the southern end of the canel to Liberty Landing Marina- which is a good choice to layover - if you fall behind in time you could duck into Manhasset Bay which have many marinas(MBM is one)and Restaurants its about 23 mile from Liberty Landing Marina

I used to fish in Lake George all the time.

Used crawdaddies and would catch one bass per craw dad!

A lot of fun. Never did fish Champlain.
