Last year I used Pettit Prop coat on my props, struts, shafts, rudders and trim tabs. Year before I used Trilux 33. Both failed miserably - when I hauled at the end of both seasons, while my hull was pretty clean, and nearly spotless after the power wash - every square inch of my shafts, struts, rudders and tabs were covered with barnacles. props looked ok, but not great.

Is there anything that works ? I saw someone at the boatyard applying prop-one, or maybe it was propglide. That stuff isn’t cheap, but wondering if it works? I was in brackish chesapeake bay water last two years, returning to salt water Jersey shore this year. Hoping to find something that actually works.

You probably are talking about Prop Glide. I hear good things about it. You might want to check out PropSpeed as well as it has been around some years and has a good reputation.
I’ve had decent luck with Pettit’s Zinc Coat as it is cheap and easy to apply, but probably not as good a product as the other two, but then you get what you pay for and they are considerably more expensive that the Pettit product.

Thanks. I have seen the comparisons of the various ‘foul release’ products - I’m wondering if anyone uses them, and if so, how they compare to the more traditional ‘anti fouling’ paints?

I never had problems with my aluminum outdrive, sprayed with trilux. But for some reason my bronze props, rudders and struts, as well as my shafts don’t seem to work out very well with it.

The only thing that works is prop $peed. I don’t use it because we often maneuver in shallow water and the sand just blast it off the wheels. Plus divers don’t give you a discount if you have prop speed anyway :).

The only way to keep the running gear clean is have a diver clean them up very month, maybe less frequently up north.

I use Rustoleum Cold Galvanizing spray paint, available at Lowe's & Home Depot. Much cheaper than the "boat stuff" and works great!

I have used prop speed and it did a good job. It did wear off the ends of the props due to quite a bit of cruising tho.
