Since moving to SW Florida I have encountered more boats in tow than I can imagine.
They are often going at a pretty good speed, shy of or just barely planing.
For large boats or bridges and such I hear them call on the radio. Other than that, I almost never hear anyone either asking how to pass, or the tow boat asking anyone to slow down.
They are almost always at a speed which makes it difficult for me to pass; I cannot do so off plane, and yet it is very tedious to follow them for miles at 12 mph or so.
Most people just fly past them, they seem to just rock and ignore them. When I've called or heard people call and say something like "can I pass on the right" they just say "OK".
Frankly I think I've done worse at times by slowing down, then having to get barely up on plane to get by (in terms of a smaller wake if I went by at 30).
What's expected?
