In August I am going to be taking some kids on a boat at a family reunion on the west coast of Florida. What is the age requirement for kids wearing PFD's while the boat is underway? I heard 9, but then found 13 in the CG regs. Thanks for any clarification.

Children under 6 years of age must wear a USCG–approved Type I, II, or III PFD at all times while underway on any vessel less than 26 feet in length within Florida waters. (“Underway” means any time except when the vessel is anchored, moored, docked, or aground.)

I'd confirm that info. I know in CA, it has been raised from 6 to 12 and under. But it is a state thing, not federal regs.

Regardless of what the local regulations require, common sense says make very child under 12 wear a PFD unless below decks. You can always pick up jackets from the local BoatUS location at no cost.
If anyone is not a strong swimmer, no mmatter their age, offer them a life jacket.
Be safe, not regretfull.
