PIB - How far will $3,500,000 go?

Has anyone heard any details? I hope they plan to do more "replacing" than "renovating." I'd like to see a legitimate marina go in.

I haven't been there since 1983. The public docks were a little rough on the weekends. It was great people watching. I suppose after over 25 years it may have mellowed a bit. I think I may have--just a little.
My favorite memory is one very late night-the Lyman (like) boat tied directly under an overhead light with a young couple aboard doing the most amazing things! My wife asked me why they parked directly under that light. I don't remember what I answered as I hurried her back to our boat.

I don't know why the State of Ohio would be doing this this when the ODNR is building a huge new marina on Middle Bass island. Part of the Middle Bass marina is supposed to be opened this summer. Of course, I haven't seen any improvements at Put In Bay in years. Of course there are a few influential Democrat polititions that are close to the Governor that even though the State is in financial trouble, they just might give the money to them.

Bliss, I can't compare it to 30 years ago, but your description is pretty dang current!

Matt, doesn't the Middle Bass project seem like the one to question? I'm personally glad to see them BOTH happen, but of the two, the MBI project seems more questionable. It was a massive project on an island with very little activity and infrastructure. In comparison, PIB is one of the most popular cruising destinations in the Great Lakes, yet the public docks are a disgrace.

The details I heard are 2 more fingers on A Dock. Extend The end of C a ways, add power and water so there is enough for all boats

We pay for transient slips almost every weekend, the only time we stay at the public docks at PIB are in the VERY early spirng or late fall. Rafting 5 deep is not appealing to us. Besides, with a little planning we can usually get into one of the other marina's or get a ball. If they rennovated the public docks so that rafting was not required I would be more interested.

I really like the new marina on MBI, however, the locals aren't really happy about it I'm told. It isn't as protected as it was originally, there is a direct opening from the lake to some of the slips and I'm sure it will be rougher than it was in the past. The marina is huge, and there is tons of room between the slips. You could probably spin a 100' boat between the fingers!

That's disappointing Chuck! I was hoping for something that would look more like MBI. I don't know how much to expect from $3.5M. We can't really compare the cost of MBI since up there they dug out and created a new basin.

Here's a pic of MBI, before all the docks were completed. The last I saw it, they had installed the floating piers below (east) of the ones seen here. I can see that a South-Easterly could probably bounce people around at the launch ramp, but I would think the docks themselves would be relatively protected. (and some motion in there might be good - the old north basin saw some pretty scary marine growth)
