I read somewhere that nontoxic pink antifreeze is safe to use for winterizing the raw water cooling part of th engine system I have a closed circuit with the green stuff in the block etc
Any comments Pls.

Yes you can use pink and should, the better pink has anti-corrosion additives in it, some cheaper pink anti-freezes don't. I go for the better of the 2.

What have you been using in the past?

You might be better off asking this on the Engines Forum - as far as I know, the green ethylene glycol is OK to use for winterizing a sealed fresh water engine coolant system, same as is used all year long - you just can't discharge it into the water ($$$$ fine).

The pink (or orange) propylene glycol comes in two versions, one contains a rust inhibitor; the other doesn't. So if you're winterizing the engine coolant system, you need to be sure you're using the correct stuff with the rust inhibitor.

The non-toxic "pink pop" is generally used in the head and holding tanks, and in the potable water system (sink, shower, etc.).

Since the boat has raw water in this part of the system all summer long [with no rust inhibiter], why then is it nessesary to have rust inhibiter in the winter?

Why not just use automotive grade A/F made from propylene glycol that contains rust inhibitors & water pump lubricant. Yes it's green but it contains propylene glycol...the same as the "PINK" stuff. Also propylene glycol is used in various food stuffs. Can't be used for fresh water tanks because it is not non-toxic because of the additives.

John, that pricey stuff is good down to -100 degrees F. Unless you're on the north slope of Alaska, you shouldn't need anything that goes down that low. The normal "pink pop" from BoatFix with the rust-inhibitor is $5.00 and change, per gallon - much more in line with the competition.

I think there is some confusion about Pink Non Toxic, and Pink radiator anti freeze here.

Does that not equal propylene glycol that is not pink ?
