So I've been thinking about a side venture for next season. I read here often, mostly from people new to boating but not exclusively, who have a lot of questions regarding boating and the Great South Bay in general. I grew up boating and fishing on the GSB. I've been a licensed merchant mariner with a commercial tow endorsement since 2001 and have worked continuously, on a part time basis, since 2002 for one of the commercial tow companies servicing the Great South Bay.
I was thinking of offering a per hour service where I would educate and answer any questions you may have, on general seamanship, aids to navigation, rules of the road. Instruction on proper use of and getting the most out of your VHF radios, GPS/Chartplotters, radar and depth sounders. How to get the most information from your charts. Boat handling, local knowledge of the GSB and any other questions you may want answered. It wouldn't be an official course toward USCG or NYS requirements, just for your own education. I have pulled alongside many disabled vessels where a little knowledge or an essential piece of missing gear could have made the difference between getting in a situation altogether, or reducing the stress and anxiety greatly. I am looking on some feedback and if this sounds like something any of you, or someone you know would be interested in.
