Post Sandy trouble spots

On Friday we took the state channel east to the Lindy cut and then took that up towards the Anchorage. I stayed in the middle of the channel as indicated by the navionics chart (no buoys in the cut) and at no time did we have less than 3' below the keel about 1' before high tide...so the depth must have been about 6' just before high tide. I've never run that cut before...does that sound normal?

Sounds right for Lindy cut, shallow spots are at south end by that island but you can see it.
Be careful using charts through there as most are outdated and Lindy cut shifts alot.
Also when coming into the creek by AYC/SS3, stay centered. Close to rocks and close to dock there are submerged objects that I have seen people hit. If someone else is coming center, try to pass close.
 
Yeah. Not a good idea to run these cuts based on the charts but I had little choice. I just kept it at idle with one eye on the depth finder and hoped for the best.

Yes, there's a sand bar coming off the north side of the east island at the southern end of the cut. Very visible.
 
For future notice, best cut is Babylon, but you would of had to go further east then come back west.
 
Not a trouble spot but I took a walk on the beach this morning and there is a lot of nasty stuff still washing up including lumber and a 20ft piling. And that was just in the half mile I traveled.

As an aside, drove the Loop/Meadowbrook to Freeport for an appointment yesterday and came over the Atlantic Beach Br and my usual route west on the Belt today. There are no boats out on the water.
 
Sea Tow GSB just posted a picture of some debris they just picked out of the water off of Lindenhurst.

I hate to say it, but I'm not in a rush to get the boat in the water this year.

Seems Seatow is going from place to place checking things.
I asked about depths and he said Watch hill is a little shallower than normal.
He also just wrote this:

IMPORTANT WATCH HILL INFO: At the entrance to Watch Hill only buoy #2 and #8 are on station. Buoy #10 is 50 yards SW of where it should be. The other buoys are gone. Luckily the range lights are on....
 
The sightings of debris are making me nervous as splash time is rapidly approaching.
Launching the 22' boat I share with my Uncle early Sunday if all goes well. We want to check out the new motor, but I'm a little afraid to open it up, or even get up on plane. Going to keep a keen eye out and my fingers crossed.
My boat is ready to go now and I'm going to try to get an appointment with the hauler for sometime next week. I think I'll be doing a lot of 1200 RPM cruising for a while. One of my favorite things to do with my boat is dinners at either local restaurants on the water, or out on the hook at night. Nothing like a nice moonlight cruise back to the dock when the bay and canal are like glass. I'll probably be doing less of that this year, or at least until the reports of large objects in the water slow down a bit.
 
Issue with cruising slow not on plane is you probably are more susceptable to hit something.
Granted at slower speed it could be less damage.
It's gonna be interesting.
I have 2 grappling hooks hanging under my boat!!!!

Hopefully the fishing will at least be good in the bay.
 
Yes, fishing in the bay, with all the raw sewage dumped into this year [:(!]
 
I actually think that the water looks cleaner than ever right now. Probably because of the larger volume of water coming in and out with the tides.
 
Was at the anchorage with Dave and Walter. A guy was using a dingy anchor to clear his slip of debris. As he would rake the bottom plumes of oil would come to the surface.... Shell fish are going to be an issue !

Did he actually pull up anything of substance?
 
Not really.
Some clothes.
Piece of hose.
Plastic tupperware container.
Nothing that would ding a prop.

Based on the winds/waves of Sandy, I suspect most of the AYC crap is over at Surfside!
Alot blew west and it's nice that you go west to enter AYC, so I think that will help alot.
Though not good for the boats over at SS3.

Bay definitely looks "cleaner" but....if you do churn up in a marina area, there's a slick for sure......agree that it's going to be more like a 1500 RPM summer BUT....I'm good with that....less fuel :-)........
