Primary Anchor

I have e-mailed my disdain.

JUST DAMN.

Seriously!?

It's like an automatic that anything made in China has to be bad and poorly made?

The Bruce anchor is no longer made. I would not put a Chinese anchor on my boat if I had other options.

Depends on what you consider a Chinese anchor. It is not a Chinese company and subject to the proper QC. I am as "buy American and avoid Chinese" as anyone, and have suffered some scoldings on this very forum for that stance. I would have put a Rocna on my boat in a heartbeat if it fit my existing set up. They even e-mailed me a template I printed out, taped together and used to make a cardboard mock up. Anyhow, the Rocnas sold here are made in Canada. They have a great reputation amongst cruisers around the world.

Just note they are very heavy, and that the rest of your ground tackle is designed to handle it.

Anchors do seem to be one of those mystical items of boater controversy. As previously stated, with any anchor, 80% of the problems are with the anchoring method employed.

The more I read and the more I learn about it my leaning is to get the Rocna as my primary anchor and keep my current Danforth in a storage locker as a spare/second anchor. (Yes, I do understand that cruising with only one anchor is a lousy idea. The purpose of the wording of my question was to keep the replies centered on the "Primary Anchor" of choice)

From what I see on the "Recommendation Chart" on the West Marine web site, the 10 kilo (22 lb) will suffice for my boat. But, I think I would tend to go one size larger with the 15 kilo (33 lb) model.

There are a lot of ways I am willing to "economize" on my boat but the anchor isn't one of them. IMHO

When I bought my boat, it came with a no-name plough anchor. I always had trouble seeting it, which is what prompted me to buy the Bruce. However, wherever possible, I like to snorkel over to the anchor to see how it has set whenever anchoring out. I was dismayed to see the old plough lying on it's side and being slowly dragged along the bottom. Tghe bottom was nice sand, so it should have set nicely, but refused to. Needless to say, I was quickly swiming back to the boat.
A friend has a genuine CQR plough anchor and claims he has never had problems. I suppose, like most things in life, you get what you pay for. There are always genuine products and knock-offs. By default, most knock-offs come out of China these days (as the world's factory). Remember when all the crap used to come out of Japan, then Taiwan...? Unfortunately, even many name brands come out of China these days.

I agree 100% with the "one Fortress and one plow" line of thinking. Like Mixman, I've had excellent results with my Fortress in most sandy and muddy bottoms, but trouble in grass and weeds, where a plow excels. If you're concerned about storage space, do what I did and find a 2-piece plow anchor made by HydroBubble. The plow can be quickly removed from the shank for better storage. I thought that they were a "gadget" until I got one, and it performs impressively. Unfortunately, the company is out of business due to the owner death, but there are still a few out there if you search.

I love that the title of this thread is "the other anchor" and the OP starts with "My wife..."

I see a lot of boats in Florida and North Carolina coming with Lewmar Delta anchors. Anyone have any experience with them? I have a danforth and it doesnt fit my bow roller very well and am considering replacing it.

I used a 55 lb Delta with all chain on my 42' GB trawler for years in FL and through out the Bahamas. I liked it a lot.

That said, now, I'd look at a Rocna or a Spade first.

See my posts. A Delta is my primary anchor on our current boat. We also used one extensively in California on a 43ft Mainship "Trawler' we rented a lot.

Nope. Not anything. But a lot of things. The same holds true for Government Motors.

I have a Rocna on my boat (47 Marine Trader). It's a 95 lb unit, I believe.

I've never dragged in the 3 years using it. This summer we had a few days in a raft up with 25 knot wind continuous, gusting to ?. There were 4 other boats around the 35' mark rafted to me (mine was the only anchor holding us.

On the third day, I actually got concerned because my anchor ball disappeared. I figured somebody drove over it and it was gone. It had actually just pulled itself deeper into the bottom and pulled the ball under.

Can't beat that. (Boy was that messy to raise!)
