Priming Cummins QSM-11s

Not expert but aren't they Self priming electric pumps? Don't fill on engine filters. Racors may need filling as usual.

I think you need to prefill the engine filters or so i was told.
Priming is a whole other story. I would think if you didn't fill the filters this may be the reason for this question.

I have not tried to prime it yet. But so far it's my understanding you do not prime the filters first.

OK, filled the Racor, did not prime the engine mount filter that was mounted high on the front of the engine as I was told that was not needed nor recommend. Put the throttle control in neutral lock position and cranked it over with the throttle advanced. Engine fired up after 30 seconds or less of cranking. Let it run at high idle for 15 plus minutes then took it up to max RPM for a several seconds. All good now. Thanks.

Common rail engines require very clean fuel. For that reason all fuel must be filtered thus on egine filters are not filled.

filters on the suction side may not fill on their own because pumps are not great at pumping air.

yes, if your primary filters are below the top of the fuel tanks, change the filters with a full tank(s). just shut off the valve at the tank connection before changing and use gravity to fill the racors.

you can also install either an electric fuel pump from racor on the bottom of the racor that will prime them, or install a by pass and bulb primer. pics of the later are available at boatdiesel dot com. search tony Athens fuel filter and primer for details.

Gravity ain't going to fill the Racor after the engine has sucked it and the top feed tank dry. :-)

Sounds like there is a good story of a difficult owner behind this thread... :)

Filling the racors is usually a must regardless of engine type. With dual racors I usually restart on the full one and then switch the valve to both, air will be sucked out, engine may run a little rough for a short while but it refills it,

Filling the secondaries though is usually not a good idea as you may get contamination in,
