We have 1990 Santego 630. Our first boat-we are the third owner. We do not know service history on twin (gas) Volvo Penta with Duo-Props. There is a broken zink on one shaft that we want to replace. The mechanic tells us he cannot get the props off without cutting them! This seems rather drastic (and expensive). Evidently the proper lubrication was not used the shaft previously. Any ideas or good tricks to try to remove the props? Thanks for any help and we'll post some pics from Republic of Panama as soon as uploading can be figured out!

Thanks for thinking of my problem. This particular zink in behind the prop nearest the stern and mounted on the drive shaft itself. It appears both props must be removed in order for it to be changed.

Dennis, I have some bad news for you. I was able to remove the outer prop on my DP, but the inner one was, well, not removable. We broke the first puller, then built a special puller. We did manage to pull the prop, but it actually pulled the outer blades off of the rubber coupling. We ended up cutting the rubber coupling and the aluminum spline. I don't think the prop had ever been removed and greased.

Thanks Ken, That is what I was afraid of! Will have to find some new props, unless there are some better ideas-or a better puller!

Start shopping for props. There might be some listed here in the classifieds, or you can post what you are looking for and someone might have them. Then all the usual places to shop, Craigslist and ebay come to mind.

There was 3 of us trying to find a way to pull the prop without damaging it. Spent half a day including the time to build the puller. If I had it to do again, I would just cut it off and save all the time. BTW, it was worth 4 bucks as scrap.
