Im about to sell some organs to fund major Electronics upgrade to my 530.
Looking for any OMG's

It will include all Garmin products, from Fantom(Doppler)Radar to AIS & Sonar.
New 8600 MFD on bridge & 2 8600 MFD's on lower helm as well as a mount for 12" iPad to be used as 3rd MFD
XM Weather, Engine gateways to display engine detail on MFD's & a bunch of Cams around the boat/ER. All labor and training..

So, any horror stories on Garmin's 8600's or some of the listed stuff?

I've been looking at the Garmin 8600 and 7600 as an upgrade as well, along with Phantom radar. I've not heard anything bad about it.

As I understand it, you only need a single xsv model to get the sonar. The rest of the units can share the sonar data via the Garmin network.

IMO, the Garmin AIS receivers look pretty expensive compared to some other units that look to have comparable functions.

Yup, only need one XSV unit and it shares.
Not sure about the 7600's but with the WiFi of the 8600's you can add an ios or Android phone/tablet and get most if not all functions/displays

I prefer separate displays for radar and plotter.

Since that's all I've used I'm not sure. if i find i dont like it overlaid i'll just move it to another screen.
That being said I can see advantages to the overlay and look forward to exploring it

be sure to get FL chart so you can come and show me the boat. :D

Done, & look forward to it!

I just looked at the Garmin black box AIS units again. I realized they are not only receivers, but transceivers so they broadcast your position as well. I don't think they are quite so overpriced now.

Brad, should have all installed by end of month and let you know how things turn out.

Im also having a 360 birds eye view Cam system installed similar to ones used in late model cars.
hoping it would help with docking etc.

Rob, Love the FlIR and will get one next. Cant squeeze it into this years budget.
You know retired old guy on fixed income!

Well with the exception of the 360 degree cams all the stuff is installed! Now just have to figure out how to use/tweak it all

Nice! Garmin manuals are complete but very boring and difficult. If you can find some aftermarket tutorials, they are better to learn your equipment.

RE: the Manuals, I agree
My buddy is coming down from NH next week for a couple of days and we'll spend the time figuring some of it out. Then the installer will spend 2+ hrs reviewing somethings and then come in a week or 2.
1 nice thing is i can connect via WiFi an iPad or 2 and they become part of the system. This way i can hang on one of e Salon couches to work things out

Looking good! What sizes did you go with?

I had a pair of 8612's installed along with the Fantom 24 radar. Very happy with them so far, but like you am learning how to tweak them. I've been running one screen for nav and one for the radar - sometimes with overlay and sometimes with just the radar. Being my first boat with radar, I'm amazed at how helpful it is and now I get why people like it.

On a 60 mile run down the Long Island Sound I was identifying boats and keeping tabs on them way before I could see them visually. The Doppler and trails features really helped with the sailboats when you can't tell if they are coming or going, too. I had always thought radar was just for night time or bad weather; now I see how helpful it is running in clear weather too.

Brad
A pair of 8612'at the lower helm and the 12.9 iPad as the third. On the bridge i have a 8610 and can use the iPad as a second MFD if needed.
I used the existing Transducers and they are working very well-
I went with the Fantom 54 open, also added full AIS as well as engine gateways to supply most Engine functions to the MFD's.
Agree the the Fantom Radar is an amazing upgrade to older systems.
I may add a forward transducer next year after i sell more body parts to fund all the upgrades!

I’m afraid that if I sold body parts for an electronics upgrade, I’d end up with a VHF and a broken antennae..
